7 Greyhounds Named 2012-13 NFCA All-America Scholar-Athletes

BETHLEHEM, PA – The Moravian College softball team has had seven players named 2012-13 National Fastball Coaches Association Division III All-America Scholar-Athlete. The award is given to any player submitted by a member coach who achieved a 3.50 grade point average or higher during the 2012-13 academic year.

The seven players honored included then seniors shortstop Brook Kowal and third baseman Shannen Mohr and juniors catcher Cassie Ernst, second baseman Eavan Matz, outfielder Taylor Mihalik, outfielder Miranda Sergas and pitcher Elizabeth Tillou.

The Greyhounds posted a 30-12 record last spring, their 13th consecutive 30-win campaign, and reaching the postseason for the 19th straight spring.

"We're proud of this group for continuing our tradition of excellence in the classroom as well as on the field," stated Head Coach John Byrne. "Our slogan is 'Tradition Never Graduates' and that goes off the field as well as on."

Kowal had 16 hits, a double, a triple, six RBI and 10 runs last spring while seeing action in 34 games with 26 starts. She was named Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll for the third straight year as well.

Mohr hit. 295 as a senior with 18 hits, eight runs, four doubles and 13 RBI, and she was named to the Landmark Conference Spring All-Academic Team as well as the Landmark Academic Honor Roll.

Ernst, who has been named to the Landmark All-Conference First Team the last two seasons and the Second Team in 2011, hit .379 last spring with 39 hits, 32 runs, ten doubles, two triples, two home runs and a .573 slugging percentage. Ersnt led the Greyhounds with 45 RBI, 15 walks, a .548 on-base percentage and an NCAA Division III record 26 hit by pitch. Early in the season, Ernst reached the 100-career hit milestone for Moravian. Behind the plate, Ernst threw out four of 22 base runners and recorded 112 putouts and 13 assists in 125 chances.

Matz started all 42 games for the Greyhounds and contributed nine hits, eight runs and 5 RBI to go along with a team high 64 assists in the field.

Mihalik played in 30 games, starting 17, had 14 hits, three doubles, 10 runs and 11 RBI last spring while also seeing time as a designated player and behind the plate.

Sergas, who made the Landmark All-Conference First Team for the third consecutive year in 2013, had a .381 batting average with 43 hits, 28 runs, nine doubles, a triple, 11 walks, a team high 18 sacrifice hits and 20 RBI last spring. Sergas also reached 100 career hits in 2013, becoming the 31st player in school history to do so. Sergas had 37 putouts and two assists in 40 chances while playing both left and right field this season.

Tillou was 3-4 with three saves, 18 walks and 25 strikeouts in 44.2 innings in the circle for the Greyhounds, and Tillou added seven hits, a run, a double and seven RBI at the plate.

The Greyhounds will start their quest to the 2014 College World Series on Sunday, March 2 when they play their first of ten games in Clermont, Florida.
