DAVENPORT, Fla. --- The Moravian University baseball squad captured a 7-4 win over the University of Dubuque at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational in a game played at Northeast Regional Park Tuesday morning.

How It Happened

  • The Spartans opened the scoring with a run in the bottom half of the first inning
  • The Greyhounds would get onto the scoreboard with a four-run sixth inning. After a trio of errors and a fielder's choice had the bases loaded, junior catcher Derek Holmes connected on an RBI single through the left side that scored senior outfielder Robert Roman to tie the contest. Senior first baseman Brett Moyer followed with a two-RBI single through the left side as well to bring in junior second baseman Mason Fisher and junior designated hitter Chris Pow. Sophomore shortstop Paul Croyle finished off the scoring in the inning with a ground-rule RBI double to right-center as Holmes trotted across the plate
  • Dubuque answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 4-2 lead for the Hounds
  • Moravian tacked on three more runs in the top of the seventh to take a 7-2 edge. Pow connected on an RBI single to bring in sophomore outfielder Matt Madigan, who had hit a single and stole second base to get into scoring position. Holmes would then connect on a two-run homer to left field, his second home run of the season
  • The Spartans added single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to finish off the scoring in the contest

Inside the Numbers

  • The Greyhounds had nine hits in the game with Holmes going 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs. He now has three career home runs for Moravian
  • Moyer was 2-for-4 with two RBIs
  • Junior Noah Ingalls earned his first career victory on the mound for the Hounds as he allowed two runs on eight hits and a walk to go along with five strikeouts in seven innings of action. Junior Andrew Connallon tossed the final two innings of the day
