Moravian Ends Trip to RussMatt Invitational with Win over Waynesburg

AUBURNDALE, Fla. --- The Moravian University baseball team completed its trip to the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational with a 6-1 victory over Waynesburg College at Lake Myrtle Park Friday. 

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. Senior first baseman Brett Moyer drew a leadoff walk and scored on an error with the bases loaded while senior outfielder Robert Roman had an RBI groundout to score sophomore outfielder David Olsakowski
  • The Blue and Grey extended the edge to 3-0 with a run in the top of the fifth. Sophomore outfielder Matt Madigan began the inning with a double to left field, and he raced home on an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of junior second baseman Chris Pow
  • The Yellow Jackets plated a run in the bottom of the seventh to cut it to a 3-1 contest
  • Moravian answered back with a run in the top of the eighth when Olsakowski crossed home plate again on an RBI fielder's choice from Roman
  • The Hounds finished off the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth. Junior catcher Derek Holmes reached on an error with two outs and raced home on an RBI double to center field off Moyer's bat. After another error, freshman designated hitter Nick Henry connected on an RBI single to right field to bring in Moyer with the final run of the day 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 11 hits in the game with Madigan and Holmes each collecting two hits and scoring once. Seven other Greyhounds each had one hit, and both Moyer and Olsakowski both scored twice
  • The Hounds sent four pitchers to the mound in a set rotation. The staff combined to allow just two hits and a total of seven baserunners in the contest
  • Junior Ethan Weber had two strikeouts in the first two innings of the game on the bump and earned the victory while sophomore David Ciaccio had a pair of strikeouts in two innings of action. Freshman Matt Snyder tossed three innings in his collegiate debut while senior Eddie Olsen earned his second career save and first since 2019 with a pair of strikeouts in the final two innings
