Hounds Complete Non-Conference Series at No. 2 Salisbury

SALISBURY, Md. --- The Moravian University baseball squad completed a weekend series at No. 2 Salisbury (Md.) University Sunday, falling 15-1 and 8-4 in a doubleheader. 

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Junior center fielder Patrick Benolken began the contest with a single to center field, and he eventually raced home on a bases loaded, RBI single up the middle by senior second baseman Chris Pow
  • The Sea Gulls tied the game with a run in the bottom of the third inning, and Salisbury plated four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead. The Sea Gulls added two runs in the fifth, two more in the sixth and six runs in the eighth frame to finish off the scoring
  • Freshman Ross Huffman started on the mound for Moravian and had a pair of strikeouts in 3.2 innings of action. Senior Andrew Connallon also had two strikeouts in 1.1 innings of action while senior Matt Ciarrocchi tossed an inning. Senior Kenny Kunzman recorded one strikeout in 1.2 innings of work while freshman Stefano Garofalo tossed the final third of an inning

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Sea Gulls scored the first run in the bottom of the third inning
  • The Blue & Grey tied the contest at 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning. Junior third baseman Paul Croyle led off with a single, and he raced all the way home on an RBI double to left center by sophomore right fielder Nick Henry
  • Salisbury took the lead for good with a five-run sixth inning
  • Moravian cut the score to 6-3 with two runs in the top of the seventh frame. Junior left fielder David Olsakowski began the inning with a double down the left field line, and he scored on an RBI single from senior designated hitter Derek Holmes. After Holmes stole second base, Pow delivered an RBI single to center field as Holmes crossed the plate
  • Salisbury pushed single runs across the plate in the seventh and eighth innings
  • The Greyhounds finished off the scoring with a run on the top of the ninth when Holmes doubled with two outs and scored on a wild pitch
  • Junior David Ciaccio made the start on the hill, and he had one strikeout in 4.2 innings. Sophomore Chris Medei added a strikeout in 1.1 innings of work while seniors Tyler Valentine and Ethan Weber both had one strikeout in an inning of action

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 17 hits in the two games with Benolken going 4-for-9 with a run as he collected two hits in each contest
  • Holmes went 3-for-7 with two runs, a double and an RBI while Olsakowski was 2-for-5 with a run and a double
  • Pow had two hits and two RBIs while Henry had two hits, an RBI and a double and Croyle added two hits, a run and a double. Senior shortstop Mason Fisher also had two hits with a double
