Moravian Falls in Series Opener Versus Scranton on Senior Day, Game Two Suspended until Sunday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball team fell to visiting The University of Scranton, 4-2, in the opening game of a Landmark Conference series at Gillespie Field while the second game was suspended while tied at 8-8 due to the weather on Sunday Day. 

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Junior left fielder Patrick Benolken drew a walk to lead off the frame, and he scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by junior first baseman Cole Cherkas
  • The Royals knotted the score at 1-1 with a run in the top of the fourth
  • The Blue & Grey countered with a run in the bottom half of the fourth to go back in front, 2-1. Junior catcher Connor Wengryn singled with two outs, and raced across the plate on an RBI bunt single by junior center fielder Matt Madigan
  • Scranton plated two runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead, and the Royals finished the scoring with a run in the top of the ninth frame
  • Junior David Ciaccio made the start on the mound for the Hounds, and he struck out five batters while pitching eight innings. Sophomore Chris Medei tossed the final inning of the game
  • Prior to the contest, Moravian honored its 11 graduating seniors Matt Ciarrocchi, Andrew Connallon, Mason Fisher, AJ Gordon, Derek Holmes, Noah Ingalls, Garrison Koch, Kenny Kunzman, Chris Pow, Tyler Valentine and Ethan Weber

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The second game was suspended in the bottom of the eighth inning by lightning with the scored tied at 8-8
  • The contest will be resumed on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. and completed prior to the final game of the series

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 11 hits in the completed game with Wengryn going 2-for-3 with a run
  • Pow and sophomore right fielder Nick Henry were both 2-for-5
  • Cherkas had a 1-for-3 game with an RBI while Madigan added an RBI
  • Benolken contributed a hit and a run while Fisher had a hit
