The Moravian College baseball team completed a three-game series sweep of Juniata College and won its 12th straight game against Landmark Conference competition with a 5-1 victory Sunday afternoon at Gillespie Field.
The Greyhounds took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. Senior outfielder Mike Zubia started the inning with a single, and he scored along with junior catcher Austin Rock on a bases loaded, two-RBI single by junior shortstop Dave Zubia.
Juniata answered in the top of the third inning with a run to cut Moravian's lead to 2-1. Sophomore outfielder Benjamin Mersky reached on an error and scored on a two-out RBI double from freshman third baseman Joe Sforza.
Moravian added two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 4-1 lead. Senior outfielder Jason Huber drew a one-out walk, stole second base and scored on a two-out RBI double from junior first baseman Kevin O'Keefe. After O'Keefe stole third, Mike Zubia hit an RBI bunt single to third base to score O'Keefe.
Greyhound senior second baseman Jake Schweitzer led off the bottom half of the eighth inning with a single for Moravian, becoming the 19th player in school history and second in two days to reach 100 career hits. Schweitzer would score on a bases loaded RBI walk from freshman outfielder Joseph Connell in his first at-bat of the game to give the Greyhounds a 5-1 lead.
Moravian had an 8-5 edge in hits with Schweitzer and Mike Zubia both going two-for-four. Dave Zubia led the Greyhounds with two RBIs. Sophomore designated hitter Ryan Edley was two-for-four for the Eagles.
On the mound, freshman Jonathan Harasin picked up his first collegiate win for Moravian, allowing an unearned run on five hits and three walks while striking out ten batters in seven innings of action. Junior Kyle Longernecker picked up his third save of the season with two scoreless innings for the Greyhounds.
Juniata used three pitchers with junior Matt Regan taking the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits and four walks, and he recorded nine strikeouts in seven-plus innings of action.
