Greyhounds Split First Double-Header of the Season

The Moravian College baseball team split its first doubleheader of the 2011 season as the Greyhounds played Mount Aloysius College at the RussMatt 2011 Baseball Central Florida Invitational on Tuesday. Moravian earned a 5-0 victory in the opener while the Mounties won the second game, 5-4.

The Greyhounds took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in the opening contest. Senior outfielder Jason Huber singled with an out and scored on an RBI single from senior outfielder Mike Zubia. Senior second baseman Jake Schweitzer had an RBI single to score junior first baseman Kevin O'Keefe, who had walked before Mike Zubia's hit, while senior third baseman Jon Baltz hit an RBI double to send Mike Zubia across the plate.

Moravian added a run in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore outfielder Rocco Del Priore, pictured at right, singled with one out, stole second base and scored on an RBI single from junior shortstop Dave Zubia.

The Greyhounds closed out the scoring with a run in the sixth inning when Del Priore had a one out single and scampered home on an RBI sacrifice fly from Dave Zubia.

Moravian held an 11-3 advantage in hits in the opening game with Schweitzer going two-for-two and Del Priore turning in a two-for-three performance. Huber was two-for-four for the Greyhounds while first baseman Mark Saxman went two-for-two for Mount Aloysius.

On the mound for Moravian, freshman Robert Solano tossed a three-hit shutout, allowing three walks and striking out three batters. Mike Godissart took the loss for the Mounties with five innings of action.

In the second game, the Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Mike Zubia led off with a triple and scored on an RBI ground out by Baltz.

Mount Aloysius tied the game in the bottom of the second on an RBI single from outfielder Skyler Sheeder.

Moravian retook the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third for a 3-1 advantage. Del Priore led off with a single and scored on an RBI double from Huber. After an out, Huber would cross the plate on an RBI sacrifice fly from O'Keefe.

The Mounties would take the lead for good with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI double from second baseman David Brown, an RBI single from shortstop Bryan Nolan and a two-RBI single from designated hitter Matt Cornetti.

The Greyhounds scored once in the top of the sixth inning to pull within 5-4 on an RBI double from junior first baseman Gregg Steinman, pictured at right, that scored Baltz, who had reached on a fielder's choice.

The Mounties had a 12-5 edge in hits in the second game with Nolan going three-for-four and Sheeder going two-for-two.

O'Keefe took the loss on the mound for Moravian, allowing five runs on nine hits and two walks with one strikeout in four-plus innings of action. Junior Kyle Longernecker tossed the last two innings and gave up three hits. Sean Steffy earned the win for Mount Aloysius.
