Greyhounds Erase Early Deficit to Defeat Misericordia

The Moravian College baseball team came back from an early deficit to defeat Misericordia University, 5-3, in non-conference action at Gillespie Field Wednesday afternoon.

The Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning on an RBI single from sophomore second baseman Andrew Tressa.

The Greyhounds would tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Junior designated hitter Gregg Steinman reached on an error with one out, and freshman Harrison Fonteix came into pinch run. With two outs, senior third baseman Jon Baltz hit an RBI single, Moravian's first hit of the game, to score Fonteix.

Misericordia retook the lead in the top of the sixth inning when an RBI sacrifice by freshman first baseman David Price scored senior third baseman Nate Newman.

Moravian would take a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the seven inning with three runs. Junior first baseman Kevin O'Keefe led off with a single and senior outfielder Mike Zubia hit a sacrifice bunt. Then, senior designated hitter Matt Kensecki and senior second baseman Jake Schweitzer each drew walks to load the bases before Baltz connected on a three-RBI double to right centerfield to clear the bases.

The Greyhounds added run in the bottom half of the eighth for a 5-2 lead. Junior shortstop Dave Zubia drew a walk to start the inning, and sophomore outfielder Rocco Del Priore hit a sacrifice bunt. O'Keefe then hit a fly out to the wall in right field to move Dave Zubia to third, and an error on the relay throw allowed him to score.

The Cougars would get a run back in the top of the ninth inning as they loaded the bases with no outs and Newman drew an RBI walk before Moravian was able to get out of the inning with the victory.

Misericordia had a 7-4 edge in hits in the game with Tressa going two-for-four with an RBI. Freshman shortstop Ryan Cacchioli was two-for-five for the Cougars. Baltz was two-for-three to lead the Greyhounds with four RBIs.

On the mound, Moravian junior Kyle Longernecker picked up his first win of the season with three innings of relief work. Longernecker allowed a run on four hits and two walks while striking out three batters. Freshman Jason Jamula started for the Greyhounds and gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits and four walks while striking out four batters in the first six innings of the game.

Misericordia used four pitchers in the game with sophomore Justin Shuleski taking the loss with a third of an inning of relief work that gave up three runs on three hits and two walks. Sophomore Pete Doggett tossed the first five innings for the Cougars and allowed an unearned run on a hit with two strikeouts.
