Greyhounds Rout Eastern, 19-4

The Moravian College baseball team rolled to a 19-4 win over Eastern University in the second day of the 4th Annual Floyd B. Wilcox Memorial Tournament hosted by Hampden-Sydney College Saturday.

The Greyhounds jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Senior outfielder Jason Huber led off the game with a single and moved to third on a one-out double from junior first baseman Kevin O'Keefe, pictured at right. Senior outfielder Mike Zubia followed with a two-RBI double to score Huber and O'Keefe before freshman designated hitter Joshua Barfield hit an RBI single scoring Zubia. Senior shortstop Matthew Pezzato drew a walk, and senior third baseman Jon Baltz singled to load the bases before sophomore outfielder Rocco Del Priore connected on a three-RBI double.

Moravian added a run in the top of the second inning for a 7-0 lead when O'Keefe doubles with one out, stole third and scored on an RBI ground out by Barfield.

Eastern scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the second when outfielder Devon Ziegenfuss walked and scored on a ground ball hit by catcher Eric Smith.

The Greyhounds scored three times in the top of the third to push their lead to 10-1. Junior catcher Austin Rock led off with a single and moved to third on a double by Pezzato, pictured at left. Rock scored on a wild pitch while Pezzato eventually scored on a passed ball. Senior second baseman Jake Schweitzer drove in Del Priore, who had walked, with an RBI single.

The Eagles would score two runs in the bottom of the third to cut Moravian's lead to 10-3. First baseman Mike McNulty hit an RBI sacrifice fly while designated hitter Greg DeSarro had an RBI single.

Moravian pushed six more runs home in the top of the fourth inning for a 16-3 lead. Barfield led off with a walk before Baltz singles and Rock walked to load the bases. Pezzato and Del Priore each drew an RBI walk for the Greyhounds while Schweitzer had a two-RBI single. Zubia and Barfield would have RBI singles in the inning for Moravian.

The Greyhounds would add a pair of runs to their lead in the top of the fifth inning. Rock led off the inning with a triple and scored on an RBI single from Pezzato, who would eventually score on an RBI sacrifice fly by Schweitzer.

Moravian scored its final run of the game in the top of the seventh inning when Pezzato led off with a single and scored on a double play.

Eastern tallied the final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single from outfielder Andrew DiFerdinando.

The Greyhounds had a 20-9 advantage in hits with Pezzato going three-for-four with five runs, which tied the single game school record, and two RBIs, and Rock going three-for-five with three runs. Zubia was two-for-four with three RBIs while Barfield was two-for-three with three RBIs in his first collegiate action. Schweitzer and Baltz were each two-for-five with Schweitzer adding four RBIs wile O'Keefe was three-for-six with a pair of doubles. Del Priore was just one-for-one for Moravian but had four RBIs and scored twice. Second baseman Dan Garcia was two-for-three to lead Eastern.

Sophomore Tommy Fenyak, who missed the entire 2010 season due to an injury, picked up the win on the mound for the Greyhounds. Fenyak tossed five innings in his first action in nearly two years, allowing three runs on four hits with four walks and two strikeouts.

Freshman Jason Jamula pitched two inning with a hit and four strikeouts while freshman Timothy Smith allowed a run on three hits with one strikeout in an inning of action. Freshman Benjamin Hammel tossed the final inning for Moravian with a hit and two strikeouts.

Eastern used six pitchers in the game with Jim Edleman taking the loss after allowing seven runs on seven hits and two walks with two strikeouts in two innings of action to start the game for the Eagles.
