INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. --- The Moravian College women's tennis, fresh off of winning the 2021 Landmark Conference Championship, will be heading to Rome, George to play Transylvania University in the first round of the 2021 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament on Thursday, May 13 at 3:00 p.m.

The Hounds, who are 10-0 overall and finished the Landmark Conference regular season with a 7-0 slate under the leadership of Interim Director of Tennis Mariana Freitas, captured the program's fifth Landmark Conference Championship this past Sunday with a 5-4 win over The University of Scranton to earn Moravian's fourth berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Blue and Grey fell to Johns Hopkins University in 2007 and the University of Mary Washington (Va.) in 2011 in the program's first two NCAA appearances, both by 5-0 scores. Moravian earned the first NCAA Tournament win in program history in 2019 with a 5-0 victory over Cairn University before falling to Middlebury (Vt.) College, 5-0, in the second round.

The Pioneers, 9-1, earned an automatic bid by winning the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The winner of the Moravian-Transylvania match will advance to the second round to face Wesleyan (Ct.) College, the winner of the New England Small College Athletic Conference at 6-0, on Friday, May 14. The other second round match at the site features Northwest Conference Champion Linfield (Ore.) University at 12-2 and Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Champion Hope (Mich.) College, also 12-2.

The single-elimination tournament features first, second and third rounds played at regional sites, May 13-15 or May 14-16. The University of the South will host the team championships finals, which will be held May 24-26 at Champions Tennis Club in Chattanooga. Tennessee. Student-athletes selected to the individual championships will be announced Wednesday, May 12.

The championship provides for a 42-team tournament. Automatic qualification (AQ) is granted to 35 conference champions, which form "Pool A." Two teams are selected from true independents and schools from conferences that do not have an automatic bid for their champions (Pool B). The remaining five teams are selected from those teams in conferences with automatic bids that did not win their conference's AQ and the remaining Pool B institutions (Pool C). The teams are geographically paired, whenever possible.

This spring, senior Brooke Adams leads the Greyhounds with a 10-0 record in singles while sophomore Maddie Figiel and senior Kristen Cassidy are both 8-0 in singles action. Figiel was selected as the Landmark Conference Tournament's Most Valuable Player after her three-set win at sixth singles clinched the title for the Greyhounds.
