BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Several Moravian College athletic teams are participating in events during October as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The women's basketball team will be running in the 5K women's race for Breast Cancer in Allentown on Saturday, October 15, and the squad will be using the event to kickoff the "Play 4Kay" event for the 2011-12 season, which replaces the Pink Zone hosted by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association the last three years.

"The 5k run will serve as a kick-off not only to our cancer fund raising initiative, but also to kick-off our season," said head coach Mary Beth Spirk. "Our first practice is on the 15th and the run will be a great start to begin the new season. We hope to run for all those that cannot and run for all those that we have lost to cancer."

Also on Saturday, October 15, the Greyhounds' field hockey team will be hosting its pink game versus Wesley College at 1:00 p.m. on Betty Prince Field. Moravian will have donation cards and buckets and informational packets to put around the field during the game from the American Cancer Society.

"The field hockey team has worn pink socks in a game for the past few years in recognition of breast cancer awareness month," stated head coach Amy Endler. "This year we are partnering with the American Cancer Society to raise some money as well. We are happy to play a small part in helping fight this terrible disease that has affected so many."

The women's volleyball team will be wearing pink uniforms when the squad hosts DeSales University on Thursday, October 20 at 7:00 p.m. in Johnston Hall. The Greyhounds will be raising money through pledges per dig and donations in memory of Ginnie Rohn during the match.

"We are saddene d by the recent death of Ginnie, who played for Moravian and also coached two of our current players," head coach Shelley Bauder explained. "She was a wonderful woman who battled her cancer courageously, and she will be missed! We wanted to raise money in Ginnie's honor, so upon the suggestion of the family, we are raising money for the Lehigh Valley Women's Cancer Center."

Finally, the men's and women's soccer teams will play their annual Breast Cancer Awareness doubleheader on Saturday, October 22 versus Goucher College with the men starting at 12:30 p.m. and the women to follow at 3:30 p.m. The afternoon is also Moravian's Homecoming, and it will be senior day for the soccer teams.

"Moravian soccer is thrilled to be hosting our second annual Breast Cancer Awareness game day," stated head women's coach Brienne Smith. "This is a cause that hits close to home for me and many of our current athletes and alumni. My mother is a survivor and is also the bravest and strongest woman I know. Thanks to proper screening and great health care, my mother's cancer was detected early. Campaigns like these are so important in creating the awareness that leads to early detection and saves the lives of countless mothers and daughters. Please come out IN PINK to show your support for this great cause and for our men's and women's soccer programs. Go Hounds!"

The Moravian football team participated in a Breast Cancer Awareness event on Saturday, October 1 when the squad hosted Ursinus College. Members of the Greyhounds wore pink gloves and shoe laces for the event while the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority held a fundraiser at Rocco Calvo Field during the game.
