Moravian Raises Over $1,600 for Wounded Warrior Project

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College athletic department has raised $1,670 for the Wounded Warrior Project over the last two weeks at the Moravian-Muhlenberg College football game and the 1st Annual Greyhound Gauntlet Fitness Run.

Moravian's total included $970 from the program sales and donations at the Greyhounds' final home football game of the 2012 season versus Muhlenberg on November 10 that also included a halftime tribute from the Moravian College Marching Band playing all five service anthems.

Moravian raised another $700 by hosting the Greyhound Gauntlet Fitness Run on Friday, November 16.  Over 100 students, faculty and staff members took part in the Greyhound Gauntlet which featured obstacles around campus and tested each participant's physical and mental strength with challenges in the performance center, the ARC (indoor facility), the field hockey field, the sand pit, and running a route around the north campus.

Moravian Fitness Center Director/Strength and Conditioning Coach Spencer Brown along with Moravian Head Athletics Trainer/Assistant Athletic Director Bob Ward and Intramurals Director/Assistant Women's Basketball Coach Sara Steinman designed the course for the Greyhound Gauntlet and coordinated the event.

"It was an amazing event that raised money for a great cause, and I know Moravian College is proud to support it," stated Brown. "I can't wait for the next one."

Among those students who participated in the Greyhound Gauntlet was sophomore Dior George (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty HS), the 2012 Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year and National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-East Region Second Team softball outfielder.

"The Greyhound Gauntlet was not only rewarding in the fact that you got a great workout but also because you were running for the wounded warriors all over the country," George said.  "Anything you can do, no matter how small, will still help at least one solider in need."

Moravian's Head Football Coach Jeff Pukszyn also competed in the Greyhound Gauntlet.

"I thought Spencer Brown did a great job of using his resources to set up a very tough course that challenged everyone involved," stated Pukszyn.  "It was a fun event for the students, faculty and staff that supported a great cause."

About Wounded Warrior Project

Since September 11, 2001, the United States has been involved in two wars which have resulted in the death and wounding of thousands of men and women in our Armed Forces.  As of August 1, 2012, there have been 6,546 casualties, 49,251 wounded, an estimated 320,000 traumatic brain injuries and an estimated 400,000 post traumatic stress disorder injuries (figures from the WWP).

We as a nation must never forget these individuals and what they have done. There is an organization dedicated to assisting these heroes, The Wounded Warrior Project.  The goals of the WWP programs are to raise awareness and enlist the public's aid for the needs of injured service members, to help injured service members aid and assist each other, and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of injured service members.  The WWP also encourages the recognition of all members for their great service to our country.
