ROCHESTER, N.Y. --- Moravian College Head Men's Golf Coach Kevin Edwards has been honored as the 2016-17 Empire 8 Conference Coach of the Year while senior Dan Leppert was named to the All-Sportsman Team.
"Being named Empire 8 Coach of the Year is a well-deserved honor for Kevin," stated Interim Director of Athletics Scot Dapp. "He does a great job guiding his golfers every year and it is nice to know that his efforts are being recognized. Since the golf team will be in leaving the Empire 8 as they will start competing in the Landmark Conference next year, it is an added plus that Kevin gets to go out on top."
Edwards receives his second Coach of the Year honor after being honored after the 2014-15 season. This year, Edwards led the Greyhounds to a third place finish in the Empire 8 Championships, and Moravian finished the two spring rounds at the Hershey Country Club last month with a two-round score of 642, the lowest of the eight teams including the lowest third round total of 317.
"I am very honored winning the Coach of the Year," Edwards said. "This is voted on by the coaches so to be recognized by your peers is very humbling. This award would not be possible without the support from the athletic department and most of all my players."
The Empire 8 emphasizes that "Competing with Honor and Integrity" is an essential component of a student athlete's experience in conjunction with an institution's educational mission. The All-Sportsman Team honorees have distinguished themselves and consistently exhibit the critical traits as outstanding sportsmen.
Leppert averaged 80.17 strokes per round this season over 12 trips around the golf course. He had a season low of 74 and finished 13th at the Empire 8 Championships. Leppert finished his career with an 81.04 stroke average of 55 rounds, which ranks 16th in school history and just one of 23 players with career averages below 82.0.
"Dan always conducted himself with the utmost character on the course," commented Edwards. "He was a great representative of the team and school when he was competing."
