Hounds Use Big 2nd Quarter to Top Alvernia, 10-7

READING, Pa. --- The Moravian College men's lacrosse team used a five-goal second quarter to turn a 3-1 deficit into a 6-3 lead en route to a 10-7 non-conference win at Alvernia University Saturday afternoon.

Freshman midfielder Christopher Klodowski led the Greyhounds with three goals and an assist while freshman midfielder Alec Oriolo had two goals and a team-high three assists. Freshman attack Jack Gozzard added two goals and an assist while freshman attack Mark Laratta contributed a goal and an assist. Senior midfielder Dave Fiumara and freshman midfielder Dominick Gurreri each netted goals for the Hounds.

Freshman goalie Kurt Dick made 10 saves in the victory for the Blue and Grey while junior defender Ed Delia had a team-high six ground balls to go with a pair of caused turnovers. Laratta added five ground balls while freshman defender John Polich and freshman midfielder Hayden DuPont each scooped up four ground balls. DuPont and freshman midfielder Rick Guerra each won 7-of-10 face-offs in the match.

Oriolo gave Moravian a 1-0 lead just over five minutes into action but a pair of man-up goals helped Alvernia lead 3-1 after 15 minutes of action. Fiumara cut the deficit to a goal just 10 seconds into the second quarter, and back-to-back goals by Klodowski put the Greyhounds ahead for good, 4-3 with 8:54 to go in the first half. Laratta scored a man-up goal with 2:10 before the intermission to give Moravian a 6-3 lead.

Each team scored twice in the third and fourth quarters with Gozzard netting back-to-back goals in the fourth quarter as Moravian led 10-6 before a late goal by the Crusaders.

The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, March 16 when they host Wells College in a non-conference match at Rocco Calvo Field beginning at 3:30 p.m.
