Men’s Basketball Drops Opener, 76-60, to Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Moravian College men's basketball team opened the 2013-14 season with a 76-60 loss to Johns Hopkins University on Friday night at the Blue Jays' Invitational.

The Greyhounds (0-1) will move on to the consolation round of the Johns Hopkins Tournament on Saturday, when they will face Mt. St. Mary's (N.Y.) College at 6 p.m.

Senior center Blake English led the Greyhounds with 17 points, 14 of which came in the first half, eight rebounds and a game-high five blocks. The rest of the Moravian attack was balanced, an indication of the new spread-it-out offense from the Greyhounds this season. Junior point guard Izel Dickerson and sophomore swingman Jarrod Dilts each added nine points, while senior guard Kenny Gula and senior center Cameron Cullen each netted eight points for Moravian.

English got off to a near-perfect start to his senior season, scoring 14 of the Greyhounds' first 31 points in the first half on 6-of-12 shooting. His presence on the offensive glass created second-chance shots for the senior, and he converted consistently as Moravian was tied with the Jays at 21-21 and 25-25.

That's when Johns Hopkins' junior guard Jimmy Hammer took over. He went on a personal 8-0 run to put the Blue Jays in front for good late in the first half. The Hopkins junior finished with a career-high 36 points, a new Johns Hopkins Tournament record. It was the fourth-highest points total in Blue Jays history, and his seven three-pointers also set a tournament record and was one shy of the school record.

The Hounds opened the second half on a 4-0 lead to cut the lead to 42-36, but that's as close as they would get. The two sides traded baskets, with Dilts having a productive second half scoring seven of his nine points. The Blue Jays then built a lead of up to 15 points and held on for the season-opening victory.

Cullen led the Greyhounds on the boards with nine rebounds, and was also perfect from the free throw line at 4-for-4.

Freshman guard Isaiah Jennings had an impressive Moravian debut, getting the start at two-guard. The rookie was all over the court on Friday night, scoring five points and recording a rebound, two assists, two steals and a block.

Johns Hopkins senior forward Connor McIntyre registered the game's only double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
