Hounds Fall to DeSales in Non-Conference Action

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College baseball team returned to Gillespie Field Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action against DeSales University, falling to the Bulldogs, 4-1.

Sophomore center fielder Anthony Gaetaniello led the Greyhounds at the plate, going 2-for-3 while senior right fielder Matt Hanson was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base. Hanson, who already has the school career record for stolen bases now at 55 and is second in school history with 189 hits, is now just two RBIs shy of 100 for his career.

DeSales scored all four of its runs in the top of the first inning, and the Bulldogs would strand 13 runners on base throughout the rest of the contest.

Moravian answered with its run in the home half of the first. Gaetaniello singled through the left side but was out at second base on a fielder's choice by sophomore designated hitter Nicolas Ampietro. Ampietro moved to second on a wild pitch and would get to third on a balk. Hanson then hit an RBI ground out to shortstop to chase Ampietro home.

Neither team was able to score in the final eight innings. The Greyhounds stranded Gaetaniello on base in the third inning, senior second baseman Alex Longernecker in scoring position in the fifth, Hanson at second base in the sixth and two runners – senior left fielder Justin Pilchman and freshman pinch hitter David Wodzsiz – in scoring position in the eighth inning.

Moravian used four freshmen on the mound in the game with John Wiedmayer getting the start, and he recorded two strikeouts in three innings of action. Bryan Schoch struck out four batters in four innings on the mound while Dan Morrin and Ryan Kahn each tossed an inning with Kahn striking out two of the four batters he faced in the ninth inning.

The Greyhounds will be right back in action on Thursday, April 16 in a non-conference game against rival Muhlenberg College at Cedarcreek Field in Allentown with first pitch scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
