Football Falls to Johns Hopkins in Home Opener

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian College senior quarterback Robbie Moyer ran for two touchdowns and 100 yards, and he threw for another 137 yards but it wasn't enough as the Greyhounds fell to No. 16 Johns Hopkins University, 52-14, in Centennial Conference action Saturday at Rocco Calvo Field.

Moyer scored on a pair of short runs in the third quarter for the Greyhounds, who were playing their first home game of the season. He had 100 yards on 24 carries to go with his two touchdowns of one and two yards, and Moyer completed 18-of-29 passes for 137 yards with one interception.

Moyer is the first Moravian quarterback to register over 100 yards passing and 100 yards rushing in a single game since Matt Johnson versus Franklin & Marshall College on October 16, 2010. The Greyhounds finished with 301 yards of total offense in the game, reaching the 300-yard mark for the second straight week. The last time Moravian had back-to-back games of over 300 yards of offense were at Juniata College and versus Ursinus College late in the 2010 season.

"I think offensively we played well," said Head Coach Jeff Pukszyn. "In the first half, we didn't get any points but we moved the football. We kept fighting in the second half. We were pretty balanced and could move the ball. I was proud of the way the guys fought on both sides of the football but offensively, we were very productive. Robbie managed the game well. He did some really good things and finished the game well."

Freshman running back Chris Negron contributed 42 yards on seven carries while freshman running back Larry Spann had 18 yards on five attempts. Negron picked up 36 of his yards on one carry when he reversed the field and picked up a block from Moyer, and Moyer had the longest rush of the game at 39 yards down the Moravian sideline.

Freshman wide receiver Jalen Snyder-Scipio added six receptions for Moravian for 69 yards while sophomore wide receiver Jimmy McCarthy caught six passes for 44 yards and returned seven kickoffs for 149 yards to move into fourth in school history in career kickoff returns and fifth in kickoff return yardage. Senior tight end Chase Zimnik added three catches for 17 yards.

Johns Hopkins scored the first 45 points of the game including 38 in the opening half with JD Abbott scoring twice. He finished the game with 50 yards on ten carries. The Blue Jays had nine different players carry the ball a total of 55 times for 341 yards and six touchdowns. Senior quarterback Robbie Matey was 15-for-20 for 127 yards, and he ran for 47 yards and a touchdown on seven carries while junior quarterback Braden Anderson was 8-for-13 for 109 yards.

Sophomore running back Brandon Cherry led JHU with 87 yards and a touchdown on eight carries while freshman running back Stuart Walters had 82 yards and a score on 11 attempts. Senior wide receiver Jared Beekman had four catches for 47 yards while freshman wide receiver Quinn Donaldson added four receptions for 45 yards. Sophomore wide receiver Ryan Finkel also had four catches for 17 yards.

Moravian's defense was led by junior defensive back Ricky Sinnig, who had a game high 15 tackles to go with 10 solo stops and a pair of pass break-ups as he hit wide receivers at the same time as the ball arrived.

"When you talk about Ricky, he's a hell of a player and did a really good job today," Pukszyn said. "Defensively, we were in some spots but it showed our lack of speed compared to their very talented group of skill players. We were in spots sometimes but couldn't make plays. Against a very good offense like this, you've got  to be finishing tackles and do those things like that, and we didn't do that when it counted especially when we had them in a couple of long third down and fourth down opportunities and we didn't do that."

Freshman cornerback Noah Miller and senior cornerback Rees Judge each had 10 tackles with Judge adding a half a tackle for loss. Junior defensive back Chris McGrath added nine tackles and a pass break-up while sophomore defensive back Anthony Orlando had seven stops.

Sophomore linebacker Keith Corliss, sophomore defensive back Sebastian Edwards and freshman linebacker Jack Campbell each had six tackles to lead the Johns Hopkins defense.

Moravian will return to action on Saturday, September 28 in a Centennial Conference game at Dickinson College with kickoff slated for 1:00 p.m. in Carlisle.
