Bethlehem, Pa. --- Freshman guard Matt Cardonne led the Greyhounds with a career-high of 18 points in an 86-73 loss to non-conference opponent Rutgers-Camden in Johnston Hall on Monday night.
Cardonne hit six three pointers for 18 points, and he added one rebound and one assist while senior guard Izel Dickerson scored 14 points with two rebounds, two steals and one assist. Sophomore forward Brandon McGuire earned his sixth double-double of the season tossing in 12 points and bringing down 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Isaiah Jennings added 11 points, three assists and one steal while sophomore guard Sean Hanna scored six points, four assists and one steal.
The Scarlet Raptors would score a quick two points right off the tip-off but McGuire would answer back to tie the game at two apiece. Rutgers went on a seven point stretch that was cut down by back-to-back three pointers, one by Dickerson the other by Cardonne. Cardonne would hit another three on the next trip down the court to tie the game at 11 with 12:51 still left to play in the first half.
With Rutgers-Camden holding a six-point lead, senior forward Garrett Kashmer cut the deficit to four and a three-pointer by Jennings brought the Greyhounds right back within one. Rutgers would extend the lead by nine heading into halftime with a 38-29 advantage.
The visitors came out with the hot hand to start the second half, but back-to-back threes by Cardonne would bring the Hounds within six points, 57-51, with 10:41 left to play in the game. The Scarlet Raptors would extend the lead again and despite trading baskets late in the half the Blue and Grey were unable to get the deficit any closer.
The Greyhounds pick things back up at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 7 at Drew University in Landmark Conference action.
