Greyhounds Extend Win Streak with Victory over Widener

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's lacrosse team ran its winning streak to three matches with a 20-9 victory over Widener University in non-conference action Saturday afternoon on John Makuvek Field.

The Greyhounds, now 4-1 on the season, were led by sophomore midfielder Liz Bill, who had six goals and was 4-for-4 on eight-meter attempts. Freshman midfielder Meaghan McMullan added four goals and an assist, and McMullan had a school-record 15 draw controls to go with three ground balls and three caused turnovers in the match. Junior attack Jillian Picciutto added three goals, two assists and four draw controls while freshman midfielder Olivia Clearie had three goals.

Freshman attack Danielle Sullivan contributed two goals and a pair of ground balls while freshman attack Breanna Federico had a goal and an assist. Senior midfielder Alexis Kersten also scored a goal and had three ground balls.

The Hounds used a pair of goalies in the match with junior Kelley Gavin making four saves in 54 minutes of action and freshman Courtney Heist playing the final six minutes. Sophomore midfielder Allie Fisher had four ground balls and three draw controls while sophomore defender Allie Brembt added two ground balls.

Moravian took a 1-0 lead two and a half minutes into the match on a goal by Federico, and Sullivan added a goal two and a half minutes later for a 2-0 edge. Widener cut the lead in half with a goal before four straight by Moravian gave the Hounds a 6-1 advantage after Kersten scored her first of the season with 18:43 left in the first half. The Greyhounds had goals from Bill and Picciuto in the final minute of the first half to head to the intermission with a 12-4 lead.

The Blue and Grey scored six of the first seven goals of the second half to extend the advantage to 18-5 with 17:41 still to play.

Moravian is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, March 21 in a non-conference contest at Gwynedd Mercy University beginning at 7:00 p.m.
