Moravian Drops Hard-Fought, One-Goal Match at Susquehanna in Landmark Conference Tournament First Round

SELINSGROVE, Pa. --- The sixth seed Moravian University women's lacrosse squad dropped a hard-fought 13-12 decision to host and third seed Susquehanna University in the 2024 Landmark Conference Tournament First Round Tuesday evening in a match that saw ten ties and five lead chances. 

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds scored the opening goal 3:45 into the contest when sophomore midfielder Victoria Salica put a pass into the net. Moravian doubled the advantage to 2-0 with a goal from sophomore midfielder Gianna Lotito roughly 30 seconds later. After the River Hawks scored, junior attack Jackie Salvatore put a bounce shot into the net at the 8:12 mark for her school record 105th point of the season and a 3-1 lead. Susquehanna netted the next two goals to knot the score a 3-3 before junior midfielder Alex Cherenson tallied on free position attempt. The River Hawks scored twice more to hold a 5-4 edge after 15 minutes of action
  • Cherenson tied the contest again just over a minute into the second half while Susquehanna retook a 6-5 lead a minute and a half later. It took the Hounds just 20 seconds to make it 6-6 on a goal by Salvatore, and she gave the Blue & Grey a 7-6 advantage a minute later. The squads traded goals over the final nine minutes with Salvatore and Cherenson each scoring once while the River Hawks sent the match to the intermission tied at 9-9 with a goal with two seconds left on the clock
  • The River Hawks began the scoring in the second half just 47 seconds into the third quarter to move ahead 10-9. Moravian countered with a little over six minutes in the period as freshman midfielder Reagan Reiner scored to tie the contest for the eighth time. Salvatore gave the Greyhounds the lead back as she tallied a goal with 1:35 to go in the third quarter, and the Hounds had an 11-10 edge after 45 minutes of play
  • Susquehanna scored in the first minute of the fourth quarter to even the match once again at 11-11. The River Hawks tallied another mark to move back in front while Cherenson scored at the 6:34 mark to even the score at 12-12. Susquehanna countered just 38 seconds later to retake a one-goal lead. Moravian had a pair of shots on goal in the final 2:04 but was unable to find the equalizer 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had six players record a point with Salvatore netting five goals to finish the season with a school record 109 points, and she added five draw controls and four ground balls against the River Hawks
  • Cherenson recorded four goals, an assist, five draw controls and three ground balls while Reiner, Salica and Lotito all scored one goal
  • Freshman midfielder Melissa Elefonte contributed two assists while junior midfielder Madi Dippel added five draw controls and two ground balls
  • Reiner and senior defender Keara Reilly both scooped up two ground balls
  • Sophomore goalie Kayla Graef registered nine saves and three ground balls
