BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian College will hold a week-long celebration of 40 years of Title IX during the week of January 21-26 culminating with a free Girls Sports Clinic for girls from kindergarten to eighth grade on Saturday, January 26th in the Timothy Breidegam Fieldhouse.
Four decades ago the academic, athletic and professional fields of America were changed forever with the passage of Title IX of the Education Amendments. This 1972 amendment stated, "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance." Those 37 words not only gave girls and women millions more opportunities to compete on an equal playing field in sports, they also empowered women to compete in any field throughout the course of their lives.
Signed into law by President Nixon, Title IX gave equal access to females and males in any federally assisted program. But without a doubt, its greatest effect has been felt in high school and collegiate athletics. Since its inception, Title IX has spurred exponential growth in opportunities for females in both interscholastic and intercollegiate athletics, helping to build the athletic world we know today.
To help commemorate and celebrate the impact of Title IX, Moravian College has planned a week-long celebration that will include several events and activities. The festivities will kick off with a badminton tournament on January 21st and will conclude with a reception following the women's basketball game on January 26th.
Guest speakers, Dr. Margaret McMenamin and Dr. Christina W. Jackson, will address the Moravian College community in a Keynote Lecture on January 24th at 7pm in Prosser Auditorium. Dr. McMenamin is the President of Union County College in New Jersey. She is also the first woman to receive a basketball scholarship from Temple University in 1975. Dr. McMenamin's co-host, Dr. Christina Jackson, is a former Moravian College professor and coach. Dr. Jackson left Moravian in 1969 and spent the next 30 years coaching and teaching at the College of William & Mary. See below for a complete schedule of the week's events.
