HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – The Moravian College baseball team had a run cross the plate in six of nine innings, but could not overcome an 11-run middle-inning rally by host Hampden-Sydney College, who went on to win 12-7 in the second game of the 7th Annual Floyd B. Wilcox Memorial Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
Junior shortstop Colin Case went 3-for-5 with three runs, while junior third baseman went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs. Junior outfielder Matt Hanson knocked in two runs and scored one after a 2-for-4 day at the plate. Hanson also stole two bases.
The Greyhounds (1-1) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Hanson drove home Case with an RBI single. Hanson came home after Luke ripped an RBI double for the 2-0 lead.
Starting pitcher Thomas Mariano, a senior righty, held the lead until the fourth inning, when the Tigers rallied for four runs off four hits, including a two-run home run.
Hampden-Sydney would keep the momentum, chasing Mariano from the mound in the fifth after scoring three more runs, two of which were unearned after two Greyhound errors. Moravian committed four errors in Saturday's setback.
The Greyhounds scored a single run in each of the final five frames, but needed to match the crooked numbers put up by the Tigers in the fourth through sixth innings. Hampden-Sydney improved to 2-0 after defeating No. 17 Keystone College on Friday.
The Tigers took a 12-4 lead in the bottom half of the sixth inning after picking up five more hits and scoring four.
There was no quit from the Greyhounds, however, who ended up outhitting the Tigers 15-14 by the end of nine innings. Sophomore second baseman Alex Bull doubled home Luke with one out in the sixth, and Hanson's second RBI of the day came in the seventh after doubling and driving Case home, who singled in the previous at-bat and scored from first base.
Luke led off the eighth inning with a triple and crossed the plate after pinch-hitter junior Joey DiSarno picked up an RBI single.
Moravian added one more in the top of the ninth when Luke stroked an RBI single to plate junior outfielder Justin Pilchman.
Senior reliever Jason Jamula came on two toss two scoreless and hitless innings as the Hounds fought back in the eighth and ninth.
The Greyhounds conclude the Wilcox Memorial Tournament on Sunday, Feb. 23 with an 11 a.m. game against No. 17 Keystone College.
