UNION, N.J. --- The Moravian College baseball team used a three-run seventh inning to snap a 4-4 tie as the Greyhounds won their third straight game, defeating No. 11 Kean University, 9-5, in non-conference action on the road Tuesday.
Senior designated hitter Cameron Leon was 4-for-4 at the plate to lead the Hounds' 16-hit attack, and Leon reached base all five times he came to the plate, scoring three times and driving in two runs. Senior third baseman Alex Bull was 3-for-3 with an RBI while senior catcher Mike Roethke went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Senior first baseman Charles Savite and freshmen outfielders Mike Mittl and Austin Markowski were all 2-for-5 with Savite and Markowski each scoring twice. Savite also added a triple and an RBI while Markowski had an RBI and Mittl ripped a double. Junior outfielder Anthony Gaetaniello had Moravian's other hit, the 99th of his career.
Senior Ian Carbone made the start on the mound for the Blue and Grey, and he had six strikeouts in four innings of action while senior Anthony Zaloga earned the victory with five innings of relief work that included four hits, two runs allowed but only one earned, no walks and two strikeouts.
The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning but the Greyhounds would tie up the score in the top of the second on an RBI single up the middle by Roethke. Kean moved back in front, 2-1, in the bottom half of the inning, and Moravian answered once again with three runs in the top of the third for a 4-2 advantage. Mittl started things off with a one-out double, and he scored on an RBI single by Markowski. Leon and Bull added RBI base hits later in the inning.
Kean scored once in the fourth and once again in the sixth to tie the game again at 4-4. The Hounds then had their second three-run inning of the game in the top of the seventh. Savite connected on an RBI triple to break the tie while Leon and Roethke added RBI singles to extend the lead.
Moravian added a run in the top of the eighth on an error by Kean, and after the Cougars cut the lead to 8-5 in the bottom half of the eighth inning, Roethke drove in Leon with an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly.
The Greyhounds will begin a five-game road trip in Port Charlotte, Florida at the Snowbird Classic on Monday, March 7 Moravian plays Ohio Wesleyan University at 10:30 a.m.
