Zien's 40th Career Singles Win Leads Hounds Past Alvernia

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's tennis team won its fourth straight match to improve to 11-2 on the season after an 8-1 win over Alvernia University Thursday afternoon at Hoffman Courts.

The Hounds jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a sweep of the doubles action. Seniors Melissa Follett and Erica Venuti posted an 8-5 win at first doubles while senior Katie Zien and freshman Brittney Eady combined for an 8-1 triumph at second doubles. Freshmen Julia Atiyeh and Selina Ocasio had an 8-2 victory in third doubles.

"I thought the team played very well today despite the cold temperatures," stated Head Coach Dawn Ketterman-Benner. "Alvernia is a very good team, and we needed to be at the top of our game to earn the victory."

The Greyhounds then won five of the six singles matches to go on to post their sixth 8-1 win of the season. Eady won in straight sets at second singles while Zien captured the 40th singles victory of her career at third singles, also in straight sets. Zien now has a 40-20 career mark for the Greyhounds. Venuti needed just two sets for a win at fourth singles while Ocasio had a straight sets triumph at fifth singles. Sophomore Courtnie Lambert rounded out the line-up at sixth singles with a three-set win.

Moravian looks to remain undefeated in Landmark Conference action on Sunday, March 30 when the squad travels to Juniata College for a 1:00 p.m. match. The contest was originally scheduled for Saturday but has been switched to Sunday with rain in the weekend weather forecast.
