CENTER VALLEY, Pa. --- Seniors Kelly Brown and Katie O'Rourke along with long-time coach and physical education instructor Dawn Ketterman-Benner were honored with awards at the 2014 Lehigh Valley Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Annual Awards luncheon at DeSales University Tuesday.
The LVAIAW is made up of seven schools, Cedar Crest College, DeSales University, Lafayette College, Lehigh University, Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, Moravian and Muhlenberg College. For more information on the LVAIAW, visit www.lvaiaw.org.
Brown was the LVAIAW Women's Volleyball Most Outstanding Athlete. She helped Moravian its seventh consecutive Landmark Conference Tournament appearance last fall. Brown played in all 34 matches for the Greyhounds and recorded 1,173 assists, the fifth highest single-season mark in Moravian history. She also contributed 345 digs, 79 kills and 30 blocks while leading the team with 34 service aces. This past season, Brown became just the third member of the Moravian 3,000-Assist Club and finished her career in third place with 3,679 assists. She is also fourth in school history with 1,558 career digs and just one of three members of the 1,000-Assist & 1,000-Dig Club at Moravian.
"From Day 1 I knew there was something special about Kelly Brown," stated Head Women's Volleyball Coach Shelley Bauder. "She went all out all the time and didn't stop until our practice or competition was completed. She was fiercely driven and her competitive nature was infectious on the court. She was the most athletic setter I have ever coached and hands down the best defensive setter in school history. Kelly was a captain, a four-year starter, and her name is plastered all over our Moravian record book: She is tied for most sets played in a season and is second all-time in sets played in a career. She was second in assists per season, the third-best setter statistically in school history, despite not playing the position her freshman year. In my 21 year career, she finishes in my top three of student athletes whose work ethic was beyond reproach and who did everything she possibly could in reaching her potential."
O'Rourke was honored as the LVAIAW Outstanding Basketball Athlete and was also Moravian's LVAIAW Outstanding Athlete for the school. She helped lead the Greyhounds to the 2014 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament as an at-large selection as Moravian finished the season with a 20-8 record. On the court, O'Rourke averaged 13.3 points and 4.6 rebounds per game while dishing out 103 assists against just 91 turnovers in a team-high 814 minutes of action. She was selected as a Women's Basketball Coaches Association Division III Honorable Mention All-America and Women's DIII News Honorable Mention All-America, and O'Rourke also earned spots on the D3hoops.com All-Mid-Atlantic Region Third Team and the Landmark All-Conference First Team, earning the honor for a second straight year, while also being named the Landmark Conference Senior Scholar-Athlete for women's basketball. O'Rourke finished her career as the first player in school history to hit 1,000 point, 500 rebound, 300 assist, and 200 steal milestones. She had 1,019 points (23rd in the Moravian record book), 561 rebounds (14th all-time), 355 assists (third in school history) and 202 steals (seventh). She played in 109 career games, starting 100, and was on the court for 3,074 minutes in her career.
"Katie is in a league of her own," Head Women's Basketball Coach Mary Beth Spirk said. "Her numbers put her in that league, but more importantly it is the intangibles that put her in an elite league. She is a two-time captain, a player that always put team first. A Dean's list student with a 3.75 GPA, Katie embodies what a true student athlete is here at Moravian and in Division III. A leader here on campus, Katie is involved as a Resident Advisor, ODK officer, along with numerous community service projects as well. The feat of over 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 300 assists, 200 steals is astonishing and record breaking in its own. Katie does all these things with quiet dignity, little fanfare but always with passion and enthusiasm. This award is a culmination of all her hard work on and off the court."
