BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's basketball team will kick off its annual Play 4Kay week on Sunday, February 2 with its Third Annual Springfield Basketball Pink Zone Clinic at Jonathan Dayton High School from 12:30 until 3:30 p.m.
Moravian Assistant Coach Sara Steinman and sophomore guard Emily MacDonnell are both graduates of Jonathan Dayton High School and will be on hand for the clinic along with Greyhounds' Head Coach Mary Beth Spirk and several other Greyhound players.
"Having the opportunity to return to my hometown for the Pink Zone Clinic is such a rewarding experience," stated Steinman. "I love seeing so many young players out to support such a great cause. The amount of people that come together from the community to make this event happen is truly amazing and I am so proud to be a part of it all."
The clinic, which is open to boys and girls in grades 3-8, will include dribbling, shooting and game playing skills. The Springfield Basketball Association will be donating all of the proceeds to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund via Moravian. Last year's clinic in Springfield was attended by over 120 youth players and donated more than $3,000 towards Moravian's final total of over $16,000.
"We are once again proud and thrilled to be hosting a clinic for the WBCA Play 4Kay initiative," Lawrence Dvorchik, director of the Springfield Basketball Association said. "The Springfield Pink Zone is something our players, organization and town look forward to each year. It a great day of basketball learning and fun for an unbelievably important cause."
The 2014 Play 4Kay initiative is an opportunity for a nation of coaches to raise breast cancer awareness and funds for research on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. Since its inception in 2007, the Play 4Kay initiative has raised over $2.5 million to support women's cancer research. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund is the official charity of the initiative.
Over the last five years, the Greyhounds have won the Play 4Kay contest at the NCAA Division III level each season. The contest is an effort to reward participating teams in the Play 4Kay who are also raising funds for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund®, in partnership with The V Foundation. Moravian raised $16,210 a year ago, and the program was also the top NCAA Division III team in 2012 with $12,025, in 2011 with $5,825 and in 2010 at $6,100. The Greyhounds, who had a goal of $15,000 in last year, raised $5,200 in 2009 to give Moravian a total of $45,360.
Moravian's Play 4Kay week will continue Thursday, February 6 with the Third Annual Pink Zone Clinic at Moravian from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., and the week will conclude on Saturday, February 8 when the Greyhounds host their annual Alumni game at noon before hosting Juniata College in a Landmark Conference contest at 2:00 p.m. in Johnston Hall.
