Women's Tennis Falls to Catholic in Landmark Semifinals

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The second seeded Moravian College women's tennis team dropped a tough 5-4 match to third seed The Catholic University of America in the Landmark Conference Semifinals at Hoffman Courts Wednesday.

The Greyhounds finish the year with a 14-4 overall record after making the postseason for the 20th time in the last 21 seasons. The match was also bittersweet for Head Coach Dawn Ketterman-Benner, who is retiring after 43 years at Moravian. Ketterman-Benner led the women's tennis program to a 288-117 record over the last 28 years at the helm, and she coached 11 teams to conference championships and a pair of NCAA Division III Tournament berths.

Moravian had a 2-1 lead after the doubles action was completed. Freshmen Julia Atiyeh and Selina Ocasio started the match off with an 8-2 victory at third doubles before the Cardinals tied the contest at 1-1 with a win at first doubles. The tandem of senior Katie Zien and freshman Brittney Eady rallied from a 6-3 deficit to post a 9-7 triumph at second doubles and give the Hounds the lead again.

Senior Melissa Follett extended the Moravian lead to 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at first singles; however, Catholic would tie the match with straight sets wins at third and fourth singles. As the sun was setting, Eady pushed the Greyhounds back in the lead, rallying for a 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 win at second singles. But shortly after Eady walked off the court, the Cardinals won a three-set match of their own at fifth singles to tie the match, and Catholic would then win at sixth singles to advance to the Landmark Championship match.

The Greyhounds had rescheduled a non-conference match with Arcadia University for Thursday, April 24 but that match was cancelled earlier in the day Wednesday to end the season.
