YORK, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on the opening day of the York College Spartan Invitational Friday, defeating FDU-Florham, 3-2, before falling to Rowan University, 3-0.
The Greyhounds opened the match with the Devils by winning the first two sets, 25-23 and 25-17. In the second set, Moravian trailed 17-14 when sophomore setter Megan Szkolnicki served 11 straight points to lead the squad to the set victory. FDU-Florham would take the next two sets by identical 25-22 scores before the Greyhounds captured the final set and the win by a 15-9 score.
Sophomore outside hitter Lauren Hostetler led Moravian with 18 kills to go with ten digs while freshman middle blocker Taylor Kornmann added 12 kills. Junior outside hitter Taylor Jennings had 11 kills, 12 digs and three service aces for the Greyhounds while sophomore middle blocker Victoria Bobyak contributed eight kills and three blocks. Senior setter Kelly Brown led the Moravian offense with 52 assists to go with 14 digs and four service aces while freshman libero Kim Groff had a team high 15 digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Andrea Giardina contributed 10 digs and a pair of service aces while Szkolnick had three service aces. Freshman outside hitter Lauren Piccinich added five kills while freshman middle blocker Jaclyn Smith had three kills.
In Moravian's second match of the evening, the Profs posted a straight sets win, 25-21, 25-15, 25-19. Jennings had a team high eight kills to go with five digs for the Greyhounds while Bobyak added seven kills. Hostetler contributed six kills, four digs and a pair of blocks while Kornmann had four blocks and three kills. Brown added another 28 assists and two aces while Groff had a team high 11 digs and three service aces. Senior right side hitter Katelynn Strohl also had three aces for the Greyhounds.
Moravian will close out its trip to the York Spartan Invitational on Saturday, September 28 with matches versus Carnegie Mellon University at 10:00 a.m. and the host Spartans at 12:00 p.m.
