MADISON, N.J. – With the fall season now complete, a first-time leader has emerged as The Catholic University of America holds the top stop in the Landmark President's All Sports Cup standings. The Cardinals have amassed a score of 6.917 to sit atop the standings with six of 20 Landmark sports having completed their seasons.
Catholic, which has placed in the top-four in the final President's Cup standings on two occasions, has never led at the end of any season in the first four years of the President's Cup. The Cardinals hold a sizeable edge after one season, with The University of Scranton sitting in second with a score of 6.167, 0.75 points behind the leaders. Susquehanna University is in third place in the standings, and is the only other team above six points with a score of 6.083. Moravian College currently sits in fourth place.
The Landmark President's All-Sports Cup is awarded based on a formula that rewards institutions for their finishes in the regular season conference standings as well as results in Landmark postseason competition. The formula was modified slightly this season to account for differences in sports sponsorship, which could lead to larger changes to the standings as the year progresses than in previous years.
Catholic enjoyed a strong all-around fall season with five of their six programs finishing in the top-three in the standings. Field hockey, and men's soccer both finished atop the regular season standings, while women's soccer, women's volleyball, and women's cross country were second, third and third respectively. The field hockey team went on to claim its first Landmark Championship.
Scranton was led by its women's soccer team which won a second-straight Landmark title and finished atop the regular season standings as well. The Royals men's cross country team was second at the Landmark Championships, the field hockey team posted a best-ever third-place finish. The Royals also had no team finish lower than fifth in any of the six fall sports.
Similarly, Susquehanna was highly balanced in the fall with none of its teams finishing lower than fifth in the standings. Pacing the Crusaders were the men's cross country and women's volleyball teams which both produced runner-up finishes. The men's and women's soccer squads both also earned postseason berths with top-four finishes.
Moravian was led by its cross country teams this fall with both the men's and women's squads earning their first-ever Landmark Cofnerence Championhips. The women's vollyeyball and women's soccer teams each made the Landmark Conference postseason tournaments while the field hockey team was sixth in the standings.
With the fall season now complete, the eight Landmark institutions have already begun competition in the winter season. The teams will compete in men's and women's swimming and diving, men's and women's basketball and men's and women's indoor track and field during the winter months.
