Brockett & Hughes Named to Landmark All-Conference Teams

TOWSON, Md. --- The Moravian College women's cross country team had a pair of runners earn 2015 Landmark All-Conference honors this past Saturday with junior Meg Brockett earning a spot on the All-Conference First Team and junior Sarah Hughes making the All-Conference Second Team.

The duo helped the Greyhounds to a third place finish at the Landmark Championships hosted by the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Sunken Meadow State Park. Brockett placed fifth overall of the 82 competitors in the meet, and she completed the 6,000-meter course in a time of 23:37.42.  Brockett has been a member of the All-Conference Second Team the last two seasons with a 10th place finish last fall and a 12th place in 2013 as a freshman.

"With Meg, we were expecting her to be in contention for first team honors as well," stated Head Coach Jesse Baumann. "She positioned herself well and stayed relaxed early on as a lot of other people really pressed the pace. We were trying to key off of Ashley West and some of Elizabethtown's top three runners. Heading into the final hills she was right on their heels and Meg fought extremely hard to maintain her position. She had a good close and held onto fifth for her highest ever XC finish at the Landmark race. We discussed a goal of top five going into the race, which was exactly where she finished so we left Sunken Meadow extremely happy with how she ran."

Hughes was eighth in the Landmark race in 23:49.02. She just missed the first team by just under two seconds as the top seven runners make the first team and the next seven earn a spot on the second team. Hughes

"After Sarah's race at Rowan, we knew first team honors were a goal to aim for," commented Baumann. "She set herself up perfectly through the first four kilometers, keying off Elizabethtown's top pack and Ashley West. Heading into about the fifth kilometer there were some really tough hills that took their toll. Sarah fought back well, though, gained a few places using her good speed toward the finish and came really close to earning first team honors. Overall it was a really good race for her and a continuation of a very strong season thus far."

Moravian is off this week before competing in the 2015 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional being hosted by Dickinson College at Big Spring High School in Newville, Pennsylvania on Saturday, November 14.
