Moravian Sweeps Catholic to Clinch 16th Straight Landmark Conference Tournament Appearance

WASHINGTON, D.C. --- The Moravian University softball team swept host The Catholic University of America by identical 3-1 scores in Landmark Conference action Saturday as the Greyhounds clinched their 16th straight Landmark Conference Tournament appearance. 

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Cardinals scored first in the opener with a run in the bottom of the second inning
  • The Hounds countered with two runs in the top of the third to take the lead. Sophomore right fielder Sara DeStefano led off with a single, and she raced home from second on an RBI double off the bat of junior first baseman Lindsey Gawrys. Sophomore catcher Marcie Silberman traded placed with Gawrys as she also hit an RBI double
  • Moravian added a run in the top of the fifth frame to finish the scoring. Junior shortstop Holly Walter singled with one out, stole second base and crossed the plate on an RBI single from Silberman
  • Senior Madi Cunningham improved to 11-2 in the circle as she allowed a run on five hits and two walks to go with six strikeouts

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Blue & Grey took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in the second contest. Walter led off the game with an infield single, and she raced home from third on an RBI single by junior left fielder Sage Snyder 
  • Moravian added a pair of runs in the top of the fourth for a 3-0 advantage. Senior designated player Emily Silberman singled with freshman Madelin Cooper () coming in to run. Senior second baseman Ajala Elmore ripped an RBI double to chase Cooper around the bases while Elmore touched the plate on an RBI single from DeStefano
  • Catholic broke up the shutout and no-hit bid with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning
  • Sophomore Natalie Otto had a perfect game through six innings as she improved to 7-2 in the circle with a run on one hit to go with a pair of strikeouts

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 13 hits in the two games with DeStefano going 3-for-6 with a run and an RBI
  • Walter was 3-for-7 with wo runs and a triple while Marcie Silberman had two hits, two RBIs and a double
  • Elmore contributed a pair of hits, a run, an RBI and a double while Gawrys added a hit, a double and a run
  • Snyder recorded one hit with an RBI while Emily Silberman had one hit and Cooper scored a run
