Moravian Sweeps Scranton on Senior Day to Clinch Top Seed in 2024 Landmark Conference Tournament

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University softball team swept The University of Scranton at Blue & Grey Field Saturday on Senior by scores of 7-3 and 4-2 as the Greyhound clinched the top seed in the 2024 Landmark Conference Tournament.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Hounds took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in the opener. Junior first baseman Lindsey Gawrys connected on a one-out double and scored on an error on a ball hit by junior left fielder Sage Snyder
  • The Blue & Grey doubled the edge to 2-0 with another run in the bottom of the second. Senior second baseman Ajala Elmore started the frame with a single, and she raced home on an RBI single from senior pitcher Madi Cunningham
  • Moravian pushed three runs home in the bottom of the third for a 5-0 advantage. Gawrys led off with a walk while sophomore catcher Marcie Silberman singled. Snyder followed with a three-run homer to left center field, her fourth homer of the season. It was also the third homer in three home games caught by a member of the Greyhounds Sports Network broadcasting crew with two of the three hit by Snyder
  • Scranton broke onto the scoreboard with three runs in the top of the fifth inning to make it 5-3
  • The Greyhounds answered with two runs in the bottom half of the fifth. Snyder singled with one out and stole second before scoring on an RBI single from senior designated player Emily Silberman. Freshman center fielder Shayla Morgan came on to run for Silberman, and she crossed the plate on an RBI single by Elmore
  • Cunningham improved to 14-2 in the circle this spring as she allowed three runs on eight hits and a walk to go with five strikeouts
  • Prior to the game beginning, the Greyhounds honored seniors Madi Cunningham, Ajala Elmore, Emily Silberman and Mya Zettlemoyer

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Royals scored first in game two with a run in the top of the first inning
  • The Blue & Grey countered with two runs in the bottom of the second to move ahead 2-1. Snyder singled and stole second base before racing home on an RBI single by Elmore. Later in the inning, Elmore scampered home on an RBI single by sophomore right fielder Sarah DeStefano
  • Scranton knotted the contest at 2-2 with a run in the top of the third inning
  • Moravian retook the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to finish the scoring. Gawrys led off with a single and moved to third on a double from Snyder. Emily Silberman followed with a two-RBI single to give the Hounds the win
  • Sophomore Natalie Otto earned the win in the circle with two runs on seven hits to go with six strikeouts

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 21 hits in the doubleheader with Snyder going 5-for-7 with four runs, three RBIs, a double and a homer
  • Elmore was 4-for-6 on the day with two runs and a pair of RBIs while Emily Silberman went 3-for-6 with three RBIs
  • Morgan recorded a 3-for-3 day with a run while DeStefano added two hits and an RBI
  • Gawrys connected for two hits, and she scored three times while Marcie Silberman had one hit and scored once
  • Cunningham had a hit and an RBI in the opener
