Greyhounds Rally Late Before Falling to Immaculata by a Point

IMMACULATA, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's basketball squad trailed by as many as eight points in the fourth quarter before rallying to take a lead; however, the Greyhounds fell to host Immaculata University, 72-71, in non-conference action Saturday. 

How It Happened

  • The Hounds opened the scoring with a jumper from sophomore guard Brielle Guarente. The Mighty Macs eventually took a 10-6 lead before the Blue & Grey finished the period with an 11-2 run as a lay-up from freshman guard Lizzie Lustig had Moravian leading 17-12 after the first 10 minutes of action
  • Immaculata started the second quarter with a 13-0 run to build a 24-17 lead before the Greyhounds got onto the scoreboard on a free throw from senior forward Sam Osorio. While the Mighty Macs pushed the advantage to nine points at 29-20, Moravian tied the contest at 32-32 on a pair of free throws from junior guard Mikayla Anderson with 50 seconds left in the first half. Immaculata answered with a 6-0 run to head to the locker room with a 38-32 edge
  • The Mighty Macs stretched the edge to seven at 42-35 early in the third quarter. The Hounds countered with a 10-2 run to move back in front 45-44 on a lay-up from Osorio. However, Immaculata led 54-50 after 30 minutes of play
  • The Mighty Macs pushed the lead to 64-56 with 5:43 remaining. Moravian slowly cut into the lead and would take a 67-66 edge on a Guarente lay-up with 2:13 left. The Hounds had a pair of two-point leads after baskets from Anderson, the second at 71-69 with 58 seconds to go, however, the squad was unable to score again as Immaculata scored the final three points of the game

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had a trio of players in double figures led by Osorio, who had 21 points to go with eight rebounds, three assists, three steals and a pair of blocked shots
  • Guarente finished with 12 points and a career high nine boards while freshman center Grace Steffen netted ten points to go with four rebounds 
  • Anderson tossed in a career-best eight points to go with four steals and three rebounds while Lustig and sophomore guard Juliana Vassallo both had seven points with Lustig contributing six rebounds and a pair of steals and Vassallo grabbing four boards
  • Senior guard Reganne Flannery contributed five points and two blcoked shots to go with career highs of five assists and five steals
  • Sophomore guard Jayda Cartagena had a point and two rebounds while freshman forward Lanie Herbert added two boards
  • The Greyhounds connected on 26-of-66 shots, 2-of-7 three-pointers and 17-of-27 free throw attempts, and the Blue & Grey had a 38-30 advantage on the boards while forcing the Mighty Macs into 19 turnovers
