Greyhounds Fall to DeSales in 2023-24 Home Opener

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's basketball squad fell to No. 14 DeSales University, 72-54, in non-conference action in Johnston Hall Tuesday evening as the Greyhounds opened their 2023-24 home season. 

How It Happened

  • The Hounds netted the opening points of the night on a jumper from freshman guard/forward Lizzie Lustig just seven seconds into the game. Moravian also led 4-3 after another jumper from Lustig while freshman center/forward Grace Steffen tied the contest at 8-8 with a lay-up at the 6:28 mark. The Bulldogs began to pull away and led 23-18 after 10 minutes of action
  • Steffen hit a pair of free throws to begin the scoring in the second quarter to get the Blue & Grey within three points. However, DeSales outscored Moravian 19-8 the rest of the period to head to the locker room with a 42-28 advantage
  • The Bulldogs kept the edge in double figures throughout the second half

Inside the Numbers

  • Senior forward Sam Osorio led the Greyhounds with 16 points to go with seven rebounds and a pair of assists while Steffen contributed nine points, eight rebounds and two steals
  • Sophomore guard Jayda Cartagena registered seven points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals while sophomore guard Juliana Vassallo had six points, five boards and a pair of steals
  • Junior forward Brielle Guarente also tossed in six points to go with five rebounds, three steals and two assists while Lusting and freshman center/forward Lanie Herbert both had four points with Herbert adding three rebounds
  • Junior guard Mikayla Anderson recorded three blocked shots, two assists, two steals, two points and two rebounds for the Hounds while senior guard Reganne Flannery had four assists and two rebounds
  • The Hounds finished the night with a 42-34 advantage on the boards including 20-12 on the offensive glass
  • The Blue & Grey shot 20-for-62 from the field, 2-for-8 on three-pointers and 12-for-14 at the foul line
