Moravian Falls to Capital in Championship of 20th Steel Club Classic

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's basketball team held a lead for most of the first back, but ended up falling to Capital (Ohio) University, 62-45, in the championship game of the 20th Steel Club Classic in Johnston Hall Saturday afternoon. 

How It Happened

  • The Comets scored first while senior forward Sam Osorio hit a lay-up to get the Greyhounds on the board and knot the score at 2-2. The Blue & Grey took their first lead at 5-4 when sophomore guard Jayda Cartagena drained a three-pointer with six minutes left in the opening period. The lead would change sides four times until a 6-0 run from Moravian with baskets by Cartagena, junior forward Brielle Guarente and freshman center Grace Steffen had the Hounds up 13-9 with 1:56 left in the quarter. Moravian held a 15-13 edge after ten minutes of action
  • Osorio began the second quarter with a free throw and then a jumper to give the Greyhounds an 18-13 advantage with five minutes to play until halftime. The Comets countered with a 6-0 run to move back in front before senior guard Reganne Flannery drained a three-pointer to put the Blue & Grey up 21-19. Capital finished the half with an 8-0 run to head to the locker room leading 27-21
  • The third quarter saw Moravian limited to seven points while the Comets netted 13 to stretch their advantage to 40-28 after 30 minutes of play. Capital continued to lead throughout the fourth quarter as well

Inside the Numbers

  • Cartagena led Moravian with 10 points to go with a pair of assists as she earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team
  • Sophomore guard Juliana Vassallo tossed in nine points to go with six rebounds while freshman guard/forward Lizzie Lustig added eight points, four rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists
  • Osorio finished with seven points and seven boards while Guarente recorded six points, five rebounds and two steals
  • Flannery registered four assists and three points while Steffen contributed seven rebounds and two points
  • The Hounds struggled shooting the ball, making 17-of-60 field goal attempts, 2-of-9 three-pointers and 9-of-13 free throws in the contest
