Strayhorn Scores 1,000th Point at Moravian in Loss to Scranton

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Moravian College men's basketball team fell to Landmark Conference foe The University of Scranton, 80-65, Wednesday evening. Senior guard D.J. Strayhorn scored his 1,000th, and now has 1,008 points at Moravian in the defeat. Strayhorn put up 17 points, six boards, three assists and three steals.

Junior center Cameron Cullen hit two free throws for the first points by Moravian (9-8, 2-5 Landmark). Freshman forward Brendan Boken answered with a layup for Scranton (13-5, 5-3 Landmark). Senior forward Aaron Thieme, sophomore guard Izel Dickerson and Cullen added scores to put the Greyhounds up 7-2 three minutes in.

Boken ended Moravian's run with a lay-in, but Dickerson answered with a three from the corner for the 10-4 lead four minutes in. Senior guard Tim Lavelle hit a three-pointer, sophomore guard Ross Danzig followed with a jumper and a deep three to put Scranton up 13-10 seven minutes into the contest. Strayhorn added a layup to make the score 13-12.

Both team exchanged scores before junior guard Tommy Morgan hit a dunk for the 19-14 lead with ten minutes remaining in the half. Free throws by Thieme and a lay-in from Strayhorn made the score 19-18 with 8:23 left in the half.

The Royals then went on a 20-4 run that was capped by a lay-in from Danzig to put them up 40-22 with a minute left in the half. The Greyhounds put together a 6-0 run with points by senior guard Garrett Johnson and Strayhorn to end the half and make the score 40-28 at halftime.

Johnson hit the first bucket of the second half, and Danzig answered with a three-pointer for Scranton. Dickerson hit a lay-in to make the score 43-32. After exchanging points, back-to-back layups from freshman forward Matt Bosch brought the Greyhounds within seven points at 52-45 with 11:29 to play in the game.

Lavelle answered for the Royals with a three from the wing for the 55-45 lead. With Scranton up 66-49, Thieme and Johnson both tallied points for Moravian to make the score 69-53. The Greyhounds would get a little closer, but fall in the end by a score of 80-65.

Johnson finished with 13 points and four rebounds while Dickerson had 12 points for Moravian. Cullen added seven points and six boards while Thieme had six points, six rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.

Lavelle led Scranton with 17 points and five assists while senior guard Travis Farrell had 14 points, six assists and three steals. Boken added 12 points and eight rebounds while Danzig had 13 points and four assists.

Moravian shot 39-percent from the field while Scranton 51-percent from the field for the contest. The Greyhounds held the rebounding edge at 34-32 while the Royals committed four less turnovers.

Moravian returns to the court on Saturday, January 26th as they host Landmark opponent Goucher College. The contest is set for 4 p.m.
