Softball Wins Two Games at National Training Center

CLERMONT, Fla. --- The Moravian College softball team even its record to 2-2 after picking up two victories on its second day of competition at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida Monday morning as the Hounds defeated Salve Regina (R.I.) University, 3-0 in nine innings, and Wheaton (Ill.) College, 10-1 in six innings.

In the opener against Salve Regina, freshman hurler Amanda Carisone picked up her first career victory with a shutout as she scattered three hits and a walk while striking out eight batters.

Moravian had eight hits in the contest with junior right fielder Mary Schlosbon going 2-for-4 and sophomore left fielder Julie Siragusa going 2-for-4 at the plate.

The game was scoreless through the regulation seven innings and the eighth inning using the international tiebreaker before the Hounds got onto the scoreboard with three runs in the top of the ninth inning. Senior center field Dior George started the inning on second base and moved to third on a single by Schlosbon. Senior first baseman Jenn Dalickas followed with an RBI single down the left field line to break the tie and chase George across the plate. Sophomore designated player Abby Jeffries connected on an RBI ground out to plate Schlosbon, and junior shortstop Lindsay Sullivan would finish off the inning with an RBI single to score Dalickas.

Carisone record three outs in the bottom of the ninth as the Greyhounds won their first game of the season.

In the second game of the day against Wheaton, Moravian freshman Josie Novak earned her first collegiate win, pitching six innings with 10 strikeouts and just two hits and one walk.

The Greyhounds had 12 hits against the Thunder with Dalickas going 3-for-3 while Schlosbon went 2-for-3.

Moravian opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when senior outfielder Lizzie Mack doubled to left center followed by freshman catcher Janae Matos singling to left field to drive in Moravian's first run of the game.

The Hounds tacked on three runs in the bottom of the third inning for a 4-0 advantage. George opened up the frame with a solo home run, taking the ball deep to right center for her second homer of the season and the eighth of her career. Schlosbon and Dalickas hit back-to back singles. Schlosbon and Dalickas pulled a delayed steal with Scholosbon scoring. Mack would connect on a sacrifice fly to score Dalickas with the final run of the inning.

Moravian scored four times in the top of the fourth frame to push the lead to 8-0. Matos walked with one out before sophomore third baseman Chrissy Marinaro crushed her first collegiate home run deep to left center. George would score on a throw after a single by Schlosbon while Jeffries had an RBI fielder's choice to end the scoring.

Wheaton scored a run in the top of the fifth inning, but the Blue and Grey shut the door. In the bottom of the sixth, two outs, runners in scoring position, Siragusa ripped a pinch hit double to centerfield bringing both runs to win to end the game with the eight-run rule.

Moravian returns to the diamond Wednesday, March 11 against non-conference Manhattanville College at 11:00 a.m. and again at 1:00 p.m. against Berry (Ga.) College at the National Training Center Games in Clermont, Florida.
