Hounds Top Manhanttanville & Berry at National Training Center

CLERMONT, Fla. --- The Moravian College softball team won two more games at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida Wednesday, defeating Manhattanville College, 12-1 in five innings, and Berry (Ga.) College, 4-3 in eight innings, to improve to 4-2 on the season.

The Greyhounds had nine hits and capitalized on five errors and seven walks in the opener against Mahattanville Wednesday morning. Junior right fielder Mary Schlosbon led the Hounds at the plate with a 3-for-3 performance while senior first baseman Jenn Dalickas was 2-for-3.

Freshman Josie Novak picked up her second win of the season in the circle for Moravian, allowing an unearned run on seven hits and a walk to go with six strikeouts.

The Blue & Grey jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI single by Schlosbon, a passed ball to score freshman catcher Janae Matos and an RBI sacrifice fly off of Dalcikas' bat.

Moravian pushed the lead to 5-0 with a pair of runs in the top of the third on an RBI sacrifice fly by freshman second baseman Megan Taylor and an RBI single from sophomore third baseman Chrissy Marinaro.

The Valiants would score in a run in the bottom of the third frame but the Greyhounds answered back with two more runs in the top of the fourth inning on an error and another RBI sacrifice fly by Taylor.

Moravian finished the scoring in the first game of the day with five runs in the top of the fifth inning for the NCAA eight-run rule. The first run scored on a passed ball before freshman designated player Abby Jeffries hit an RBI ground out. Senior pinch hitter Lizzie Mack picked up an RBI when she reached on an error before Taylor connected on an RBI double. Taylor scored the final run on another error in the inning.

The Greyhounds had seven hits while playing their third extra-inning game of the season in the second game against Berry. The Hounds are 2-1 in extra frames so far in 2015. Jeffries paced Moravian at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance to go with three RBIs while senior center fielder Dior George was 2-for-4.

Freshman hurler Amanda Carisone improved to 2-1 in the circle after allowing three runs, just one earned, on 11 hits to go with four strikeouts over eight innings.

The Vikings broke a scoreless tie with a run in the top of the fifth inning.

Moravian answered in the bottom of the sixth frame and took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs. Jeffries drove in both runs, scoring George, who had singled, and Schlosbon, who had reached on a fielder's choice.

Berry knotted the score at 2-2 in the top of the seventh, forcing extra innings. The Vikings took advantage of the international tiebreaker putting a runner at second base in the top of the eighth inning, scoring to move ahead, 3-2.

Sophomore catcher Niki Maffettone started the bottom of the eighth on second for the Hounds, and she moved to third on a single by George. Schlosbon followed with an RBI single to score Maffettone and tie the game. After George was caught stealing and another out, Schlosbon found herself at third base where she raced across the plate on an RBI single by Jeffries to extend Moravian's winning streak to four games.

The Greyhounds are scheduled to plate two more games at the National Training Center on Thursday, March 12 as the squad takes on SUNY Oneonta at 5:00 p.m. and Bates (Maine) College at 7:00 p.m.
