SCRANTON, Pa. --- The third seeded Moravian College women's lacrosse team dropped a 20-12 decision to second seed and No. 18 The University of Scranton in the Landmark Conference Semifinals Wednesday afternoon.
The Greyhounds complete the 2019 season with a program record 12 victories and a 12-6 overall mark, and the Hounds were in the postseason for the third straight season with their second consecutive berth in the Landmark Conference Semifinals.
Moravian had six goals scorers on Wednesday led by senior attack Jillian Picciuto, who had three goals and three assists to finish the spring with a career-high and school record 104 points, her third 100-point season of her career. Picciuto, who also had four draw controls, completed her four seasons with the Greyhounds with school records of 390 points, 237 goals, 153 assists and 285 draw controls.
Junior attack Liz Bill had three goals and 12 draw controls against the Royals as she finished the season with a career best 99 points and a school record 114 draw controls in 2019 while sophomore midfielder Meaghan McMullan added two goals and an assist as she became the first player other than Picciuto to score 100 points in a season, finishing the campaign with 101 points. Senior attack Dalia Aguilar netted a pair of goals in her final collegiate game while sophomore attack Danielle Sullivan and freshman attack Kelsey Moore both scored one goal.
Senior goalie Kelley Gavin made seven saves and scooped up three ground balls in 53 minutes of action to finish her career with 454 saves to go along with school records of 31 victories and a 13.06 goals-against average. Sophomore goalie Courtney Heist had three saves in seven minutes of action. Freshman midfielder Lindsey Strohl contributed a pair of draw controls while senior defenders Melissa Webber and Kristen Baxter each scooped up two ground balls as did freshman defender Meghan Moore .
The Greyhounds jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on goals by Sullivan and Bill in the first 1:54 of the match. Scranton answered with three goals to take a 3-2 advantage before Kelsey Moore scored to knot the contest at 3-3 with 19:40 left in the first half. The Royals would take control of the contest over the next 12 minutes as they scored six times sandwiched around a goal from Bill to build a 9-4 edge with 7:04 left in the half. The Blue and Grey would score three of the final four tallies of the half as Picciuto pulled Moravian within three at the intermission at 10-7.
Scranton opened the second half with five straight goals to make it a 15-7 game before Aguilar scored her second of the afternoon with just under 19 minutes on the clock. That tally started three straight goals by the Greyhounds as they pulled within five on a goal from McMullan with 10:25 remaining. However, The Royals would net five of the final seven goals as they moved onto the 2019 Landmark Conference Championship match at No. 10 Catholic University of America on Saturday, May 4.
