Greyounds Run Past Bulldogs in Field Hockey Opening Win

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. --- Sophomore forward Erin Tiwold scored a pair of unassisted goals to lead the Moravian College field hockey team to a 3-1 non-conference win at DeSales University to open the 2014 season Saturday afternoon.

The Greyhounds took an early lead as Tiwold scored the first goal of the season just 2:50 into the match. The lead wouldn't last long as the Bulldogs needed just under seven minutes to tie the contest at 1-1.

Moravian struck quickly again in the second half with junior forward Kelly O'Donnell finding the back of the cage just 2:33 into action as senior forward Cayley Wise won a loose ball and passed it towards O'Donnell, who deflected it past the keeper.

Tiwold added an insurance goal just over three minutes later on a breakaway that she put past the keeper on the left post.

"Erin really made the most of her first collegiate start by scoring her first two career goals," stated Head Coach Amy Endler. "She was so determined to score on her second goal she followed the ball into the cage with her entire body. As a team we played very well together with our passing game and our support."

Sophomore Megan Kanyuk posted four saves for the Greyhounds while sophomore defender/midfielder Shauna Poling added a pair of defensive saves. Poling helped keep the match at 1-1 with her first defensive save as a Greyhound in the 20th minute, and her second stop came shortly after Tiwold's second goal to keep Moravian's two-goal advantage.

"Shauna came up big with two defensive saves, being in the right place at the right time and Megan did a nice job communicating with her defense so everybody was in the correct place," commented Endler. "I am pleased in getting that first win of the season and hope to continue the momentum next week."

The Hounds held a 13-11 edge in shots in the contest as well as an 11-9 advantage in penalty corners.

The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action on Saturday, September 6 when they host Immaculata University at Betty Prince Field in the squad's 2014 home opener.
