Duffin Nets Hat Trick as Field Hockey Blanks Cedar Crest, 7-0

ALLENTOWN, Pa. --- Senior midfielder Catherine Duffin netted her first career hat trick and became just the eight player in Moravian College field hockey history to reach 25 career goals as the Greyhounds posted a 7-0 victory at Cedar Crest College in non-conference action Wednesday.

Duffin scored her three goals in a span of 9:19 during the second half to help turn a 2-0 halftime lead into the 7-0 final score. Duffin's hat trick is the 14th in school history and the first since Briana Van Buskirk '13 scored three goals versus Mercy College on October 18, 2011. Duffin is now tied for seventh in school history with 25 goals, and she is fourth in career assists with 17 and fifth with 67 points during her four years in Bethlehem.

The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute when junior forward Kelly O'Donnell knocked in a pass from sophomore forward Erin Tiwold for her team-leading fourth goal of the season. O'Donnell's tally would be all that sophomore goalie Megan Kanyuk needed in the cage, posting three saves for her first career shutout.

The Hounds headed into the intermission with a 2-0 lead after junior midfielder Ely Vazquez found the back of the net for her first goal of the season on a pass from Duffin in the 29th minute.

Duffin opened the second half scoring with an unassisted tally in the 46th minute and Tiwold would score her third goal of the year less than a minute later off of an O'Donnell pass. Duffin knocked in a cross from sophomore forward Kyla Rodrigues in the 53rd minute, and Duffin finished off the scoring her hat trick in the 56th minute with another unassisted goal.

Sophomore midfielder/forward Christina Duddy put the final ball in the cage in the 67th minute for her first goal of the fall with an assist by junior forward Tiffany Gumina.

The Hounds held a 20-3 advantage in shots and an 11-4 edge in penalty corners in the match.

Moravian is scheduled to return to action on Saturday, September 20 when the squad hosts FDU-Florham in a non-conference match on the turf at Rocco Calvo Field starting at 2:00 p.m. The Greyhounds will be hosting their annual Alumni Game before the contest at 12:00 p.m.
