Top 10 Stories of 2015-16 - #8 Hamel Named Academic All-American

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian College is looking back at the 2015-16 athletic campaign with the No. 8 story in Top 10 Stories – senior Rebecca Hamel being named to the 2015-16 CoSIDA Academic All-America® NCAA Division III Women's At-Large Second Team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Hamel was the 44th Moravian student-athlete to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-American®. To be eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America® accolades, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.30 grade-point average, be a sophomore, junior or senior and be a starter or significant reserve. Beginning in 2011-12, the program is made up of four levels – NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and College Division (NAIA, Canadian colleges and junior colleges). The At-Large team consists of student-athletes that compete in beach volleyball, bowling, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, and water polo.

"I was pretty thrilled to be named an Academic All-American back in June," stated Hamel. "As any student-athlete is aware, it is not an easy task to balance academics, sports, and other extracurriculars, so it was truly a great feeling for my hard work to be recognized. More than anything, it made me very appreciative and grateful for the support I had during my time at Moravian including my physics and mathematics professors, coaches, friends, and family-especially my mom. I could not have accomplished what I did without those individuals."

Hamel completed her Bachelor's degree in physics and mathematics at Moravian with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average this past May as she earned spots on the Dean's List in each of her eight semesters in Bethlehem.

"Moravian College allowed me to be involved with a wide range of groups, organizations, and activities, Hamel said. "So I will simply remember the many memories I have shared with my teammates, classmates, alpha sigma alpha sisters, friends, and professors."

On the field, Hamel netted a pair of goals and contributed two assists for the Hounds this past fall while starting in all 18 matches for Moravian in 2015. During her career, Hamel was a four-time selection to the ZAG/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III Scholars of Distinction and the NFHCA Division III Academic Squad, and she was a three-time honoree on the Landmark Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll. She started 53 of 65 matches played with the Greyhounds and served as a team captain in 2015. Hamel finished her career with seven goals and four assists for 18 points to go with a pair of game-winning goals and a defensive save.
