Moravian Moves to 2nd in Landmark President's Cup Standings after Winter Season

2013 Landmark Conference Winter Presidents' Cup standings

TOWSON, Md. --- At the end of the winter sports season, The Catholic University of America maintained its lead in the Landmark Conference President's Cup standings while Moravian College moved into second place. The President's Cup was created in the inaugural year of the conference to recognize the best overall athletics program.

The Cardinals won championships in men's and women's basketball this winter while finishing third in women's indoor track and field and third in women's swimming. The six winter sport teams combined for a league-high 42.25 points to add to their 44.5 points from the fall. Catholic has accumulated 86.75 points through the two sports seasons for an average of 7.23.

Moravian moved into second place in the standings after winning the men's and women's indoor track and field championships. The Greyhounds also finished as runner-up in the women's basketball standings. Moravian boasts a combined fall and winter average of 6.53.

The Scranton Royals are in third place with a 6.50 average. The men's basketball and women's swimming teams were runner-up while the women's basketball and men's swimming teams finished third.

Rounding out the top half of the standings, Susquehanna maintained a hold on fourth place at 6.15. The Crusaders won the women's swimming championship and finished second in men's swimming and women's indoor track this winter.

The Cup is awarded based on a formula that rewards institutions for regular season conference standings as well as results in Landmark postseason competition. Each team receives points based on their finish with top seeded teams receiving eight points; second place teams receive seven points, etc. Additional points are awarded for conference postseason victories. The runner-up in the Landmark Tournament receives one point, while the Landmark Champions receive three points.

Individual sports use the championship team standings to award points and then add points for individual finishes. Each individual event champion in swimming and track and field receives 0.25 points while the top seven finishers in cross country each receive 0.50 points.

The Landmark Conference sponsors 20 sport championships, but at the end of the year only the top 15 sport totals from each institution will be included to account for differences in sport sponsorship across the eight institutions. The modification could produce a large variance in institution averages from winter to spring President's Cup standings.
