Men's Basketball Receiving Sam Schoenfeld Sportsmanship Award from CBOA

READING, Mass. --- The Moravian College men's basketball team has been chosen as the 2012-13 recipient of the Sam Schoenfeld Sportsmanship Award presented by the referees who are members of the Collegiate Basketball Official Association.

Head coach Jim Walker will receive the award at the CBOA Annual Banquet on Saturday, May 4th at the Tropicana Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The CBOA is considered to be the largest college basketball officials organization in the world and covers from New England to Washington, D.C.

Sam Schoenfeld, former college basketball great who possessed a great deal of energy, impeccable honesty and a charismatic personality, was one of the CBOA's founding fathers. Sam espoused integrity and strong character, which set him apart from most men. A brief illness took Sam's life in early 1956 and as a result CBOA decided to memorialize Sam through an award that would be annually presented to a person who exemplified the principles and characteristics so prominently displayed by Sam Schoenfeld. Accordingly, the award is presented to the college or university, which in the judgment of the CBOA membership, best exemplifies "the highest degree of sportsmanship, character, and ethics among their players, coaches and spectators."

This is the highest honor that CBOA annually bestows on any collegiate institution. Moravian was named the area winner for Lehigh – Scranton Chapter in 2007-08 but 2012-13 is the first time Moravian is receiving the top honor from the CBOA since it began after the 1956-57 season.
