Men's Basketball Wraps Up 2012 at Muhlenberg This Weekend

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Moravian College men's basketball squad will travel to rival Muhlenberg College on Sunday, December 16th for the Matte Award game. The contest is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Matte Award: Each year since 1987-88, Moravian and Muhlenberg have battled for the Matte All-Sports Trophy. The award is named for Aaron Matte, a 1970 graduate of Muhlenberg, who was a big supporter of local Division III athletics. The trophy is awarded to the school with the better won-loss record in head-to-head competition in all sports. The standings are at 4-3 in favor of Muhlenberg this year with the Mules earning wins in football, field hockey, men's soccer and women's cross country. Moravian's victories are in volleyball, women's tennis and women's soccer.

Greyhounds vs. Mules: Muhlenberg owns a 59-53 all-time record over Moravian. Last winter Muhlenberg won, 74-73, after a last second layup from then freshman guard Malique Killing.

Going Deep: The Greyhounds made a school-record 18 three-pointers in their, 89-58, victory over The United States Merchant Marine Academy. Moravian had ten different players make a three-pointer.

Hot Start: The Greyhounds are off to their best start (6-1, 2-0 Landmark) since the 2002-03 campaign. This is the seventh time in school history that Moravian started its season 6-1.

Player of the Week: Senior guard Garrett Johnson was named the Landmark Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week after averaging 18.5 points and 3.0 rebounds per contest in two games last week. Johnson put up a career-high 25 points in an 81-76 victory over Ursinus.

Outscoring in the Second Half: The Greyhound have outscored their opponents 280 to 208 in the second half this season.

Points off the Bench: Moravian is averaging 23.6 points of the bench with junior center Blake English leading the way with 11.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game to go with his eight blocks off the bench.

Chasing 1,000: Senior guard D.J. Strayhorn is just 145 points away from hitting the 1,000 point mark at Moravian. Last season, Strayhorn hit 1,000 points for his collegiate career last February after scoring 311 points with Marywood University his freshman year before transferring to Moravian.

Starting the New Year: Moravian returns to the court on January 2nd, 2013 when they open up the 35th Annual Greyhound Classic. The Greyhounds will take on Kean University at 5:30 p.m. inside Johnston Hall.
