Greyhounds Win 3rd Straight with 81-61 Victory Over Drew

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Moravian College men's basketball team defeated Landmark Conference foe Drew University, 81-61, Wednesday evening. Five different Greyhounds score in double figures with Junior center Cameron Cullen tallying a double-double off of 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Senior guard D.J. Strayhorn put up a game-high 19 points to go with his four steals and four assists while freshman forward Matt Bosch had 15 points and five rebounds. Senior guard Garrett Johnson finished with 13 points, nine rebounds and three steals while sophomore guard Izel Dickerson had ten points, four assists and four steals. Senior forward Aaron Thieme added six points and six rebounds.

Moravian (12-8, 4-5 Landmark) jumped out to a 7-0 lead with points from Thieme, Strayhorn and Cullen. Senior center Lucas Levenson for Drew (9-11, 3-6 Landmark) hit a layup to put them on the board four minutes in.

Strayhorn came back with a three-pointer for the 10-2 lead. After trading scores, a lay-in by Cullen put the Greyhounds up 17-7 with 13:35 remaining in the half. A layup by Johnson put Moravian up 21-9 nine minutes in. A three by junior guard John Ford for the Rangers made the score 21-12.

Senior forward Mike Weinert powered to the hole for the lay-in and the 25-12 lead with just under ten minutes to play. A three by Johnson, a two from Strayhorn and two free throws by junior center Blake English put the Greyhounds up 32-12 with five minutes to play in the half.

Drew rallied back to within ten points of the lead with points from freshmen guards Jason Huelbig and Mike Klinger, and Ford. A deep three-pointer by Strayhorn put Moravian on top 39-26 at halftime.

The Greyhounds shot 45-percent from the field while the Rangers shot 37-percent from the field. Moravian held the edge in rebounds at 21-18 while committing five less turnovers. Strayhorn led Moravian with 13 points while Ford had nine points for Drew.

Bosch started the scoring in the second half off a free throw, and Dickerson added to it with a three-pointer. Klinger answered for the Rangers with a three from the corner to make the score 42-29. Levenson hit a lay-in to make it an 11 point game at 46-35 three minutes in for Drew.

Both teams kept exchanging baskets over until Dickerson drilled a three from straight away for the 59-42 lead with just under ten minutes remaining. Klinger came back with a three of his own, but Bosch and Cullen hit back-to-back layups for the 63-45 lead.

Back-to-back three-pointers for the Rangers by sophomore guard Steve Hydzik and junior guard Luke Glass to make the score 65-53 with six minutes to play. Two minutes later Glass hit a mid-range jumper to bring Drew within ten points at 69-59, but Bosch responded with a three for the 72-59 lead. Moravian extended its lead, and a late three from Dickerson gave the Greyhounds an 81-61 victory.

Leading the way for Drew was Glass with 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Klinger added 12 points and three assists while Huelbig had ten points and two steals. Ford put up nine points while sophomore forward Zach Nolan finished with eight points, five boards, two steals and two assists for the Rangers.

Moravian shot 45-percent from the field for the contest while Drew shot 37-percent from the field. The Greyhounds went 7-of-17 from beyond the arc while out-rebounding the Rangers 46-36. Moravian committed five less turnovers in the contest.

The Greyhounds returns to the court on Saturday, February 2nd as they travel to Landmark opponent Juniata College. The contest is set for 7 p.m.
