SELINSGROVE, Pa. --- The fourth seeded Moravian University field hockey team tried to rally from a 2-0 deficit before falling to top seed Susquehanna University, 3-2, in a 2023 Landmark Conference Tournament Semifinal match Wednesday evening.
How It Happened
- The squads played a scoreless opening quarter
- The River Hawks netted the first goal of the match in the 22nd minute to take a 1-0 lead into halftime
- Susquehanna stretched the advantage to 2-0 with a goal in the 39th minute
- The Greyhounds got on the scoreboard just a minute later when senior midfielder Sarah Bietka scored on a penalty stroke to cut the deficit to 2-1 with a little over five minutes remaining in the third quarter
- The River Hawks pushed the edge back to two goals at 3-1 in the 54th minute
- The Hounds closed within a goal again with just under three minutes to play as junior forward Sydney Anderson knocked in a pass from senior defender Onalee Long on a penalty corner to make it 3-2
- Anderson's goal was the last shot of the match by either squad
Inside the Numbers
- Bietka netted her fifth goal of the season to finish her career with 13 goals and a total of 33 points as she had seven career assists
- Anderson also scored her fifth goal of 2023 to increase her career total to 32 as she moved into a tie for third in program history. Anderson will head to her final season ranked fifth in career scoring at Moravian with 73 points on 32 goals and nine assists
- Long recorded her fifth assist of the year, and she completed her career with 10 assists and a total of 24 points as she also scored seven career goals
- Freshman goalie Maia Machado registered four saves in the contest
- Junior midfielder Savannah Sutter added a defensive save, her second of the year and the third of her career
- The Rivers Hawks held a 9-6 advantage in shots while the Blue & Grey had a 9-7 edge in penalty corners
- Moravian was making its third straight appearance in the Landmark Conference Semifinals
