Men's Soccer Scores Win Behind Algor's Two Goals

IMMACULATA, Pa. – During the 2013 preseason, Moravian College men's soccer Head Coach Todd Ervin was perfectly clear on what senior forward Jeffrey Algor had to do this season.

"Jeff needs to score for us, plain and simple," Ervin said.

The senior star is fulfilling his headman's wishes, as Algor tallied twice in a 2-1 victory at Immaculata University on Saturday afternoon, bringing his season total to five in just four games.

The Greyhounds (3-1) had to play from behind despite dominating possession and scoring chances throughout the game. The Mighty Macs (0-3) opened Saturday's scoring with a goal in the 17th minute.

"We dominated the game," Ervin said. "We gave the ball away too much in the first half, which led to their goal. Once we solved that problem, it led to sustained pressure on their goal and we were able to put two goals in."

Both of those goals came from the foot of Algor in the second half. The equalizer came in the 68th minute when junior forward Shane McCaslin broke through a scrum near the Immaculata net and served a short cross to Algor, who finished with precision.

Algor struck again in the 81st with the game-winner off a perfect pass from freshman forward Brendan Barca.

"Jeff was able to play well in the system we were asking him to play," Ervin said. "As he gets used to that, I see him using his athletic ability and intelligence to excel. If he stays on the right track he can score quite a few goals."

Sophomore Brian Boland was solid in goal with four saves, earning his third win between the pipes in 2013.

A win goes a long way in developing a team's confidence, which becomes even more important heading into one of the most anticipated matches of the season. Moravian carries a head of steam from a 3-1 start into the Matte Award Match with Muhlenberg College on Wednesday.

Ervin said he expects the club's energy level to be high when they host the rival Mules at 4 p.m. on the HUB Quad grass.

"Hopefully we can take momentum into the game with Muhlenberg," Ervin said. "Our seniors and juniors are starting to learn the rivalry very well, and our younger guys are just starting to get an idea. They'll all get a taste very soon."
