Men’s Soccer Finishes Season With 3-1 Loss to Goucher

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Moravian College men's soccer team concluded the 2013 season with a 3-1 loss to Goucher College on Saturday afternoon on the HUB Quad in Landmark Conference action.

Saturday also marked Senior Day for the Greyhounds, and one Moravian men's soccer star left his final mark on the HUB Quad.

Forward Jeffrey Algor scored his 13th goal of the season, a career high, to give the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute against the Gophers. On an indirect set play just outside of the Goucher 18-yard box, freshman Saul Marcial made a quick tap on the ball, and sophomore Brett Harder eluded the defensive wall with a swift pass to Algor. The Greyhounds' leading goal scorer ripped a shot to the lower right corner of the goal for the 1-0 lead.

"The guys wanted it really bad today, and Justin and I especially wanted a win in our last game," Algor said. "I was happy to get a goal to end my career. It's been a pleasure playing alongside these guys. The future looks so bright here. There's a lot of skill here and the level of play has developed considerably."

Algor finished the 2013 season sitting atop the Landmark Conference in goals scored with 13 and points with 28. His goal total this season is tied for ninth all-time at Moravian, and his 28 points are tied for the 10th highest in a single season. Algor graduates with 47 career points for 10th on the all-time list.

The Gophers tied the match in the 26th minute, and eventually scored three unanswered goals to win the game, adding second-half tallies in the 63rd and 81st minutes.

Senior defender Justin Dilts also played the final game of his career after serving as an unflinching member of the Greyhound backline during his 63-match college career.

"When I first got here, it was a completely different program," Dilts said. "Through these four years, we came a long way. This program is headed in the right direction. The guys we had on the field with us are going to do big things in the future."

Dilts said his fondest memory wearing the Blue and Grey was his goal against Centenary College his freshman year, which his friend, Algor, had a hand in. Algor mentioned this season's win against Wesley College as one of his favorite moments. The senior striker headed home a goal with three minutes remaining in overtime, and freshman Saul Marcial scored the Golden Goal in overtime.

The classmates shared a hug or two after the game and during the postgame cool down run, the Greyhounds halted at the far sideline, allowing Algor and Dilts to make the trot back to the hill alone to the applause of the Moravian families and fans.

"Our friendship does not end here," Algor said. "We've been playing together since sophomore year of high school, and we became roommates our first year at Moravian. He's such a good guy. We would like to wish good luck to our teammates. We'll be back to watch."

Marcial almost helped Algor notch another assist on the HUB Quad on Saturday when he took a pass from the senior and nearly snapped the Goucher goal post in the second half.
