ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's basketball squad, which is now 5-2 on the season, came up short in the opening Landmark Conference contest to Elizabethtown College 74-68.
Sophomore guard Maddie Capuano was the leading scorer for the Hounds finishing with a season-high 23 points and also added three assists and three rebounds. Sophomore forward Nadine Ewald tossed in 19 points to go with 12 boards for her third double-double of the season while sophomore guard Karlie Brogan also ended the afternoon with a double-double figures with 13 points and 10 boards. Senior forward Trista Cunningham ended with three rebounds, two steals and three blocks while freshman guard Julia Sirotnak ended the afternoon with six points, three rebounds, a steal and a rebound.
Senior forward Ciara Stewart scored two points for the Blue and Grey while adding an assist while junior forward Ariana Caiati scored two points and collected three rebounds. Sophomore guard Emily Walls scored a point for Moravian while adding two rebounds and a steal. Senior forward Jen Cella added one rebound and a block while sophomore guard Tyis Mullen grabbed a rebound and freshman guard Jennifer McClave had an assist and a rebound.
Moravian would get on the board first with a jump shot by Capuano but was quickly matched by the Blue Jays just over a minute into the game. The teams would exchange leads, but Blue and Grey would take a 21-18 lead after layups by Ewald and Sirotnak into the second quarter. Both teams fought back and forth in the second 10-minute period with Caiati giving the Greyhounds their biggest lead of the quarter at 27-23 with 5:28 to play before the intermission. The squads would head to halftime tied at 33-33.
The second half was no different from the first, with the teams battling back and forth for the lead. Ewald's layup and Brogan's free throws helped increase the lead back to four points, 41-37, 6:09 remaining in the third quarter. The Blue Jays would retain the lead for good with 4:10 left in the third and Moravian ended the quarter trailing 54-49.
Elizabethtown would push the lead at 12 points in the final quarter and the Hounds were unable to answer, coming within 7 points down the stretch before ultimately falling to their conference opponent.
The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action on Monday, December 4 in a non-conference game against The College of New Jersey with tip-off slated for 7:00 p.m. in Johnston Hall.
